- Rowan M1 contributionOnce in a life timeThe great historic buildings are a sight to behold, don’t even get me started on the butterfly house absolutely incredible experience so grateful to have seen this in my life time. I am captivated by the wine and beer selection in the cafe, made the drive home a true experience. Will be bringing the kids next time !Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 January 2024
- manxseasiderRamsey, United Kingdom383 contributionsBeautifully landscaped park. Facilities perhaps a bit dated but functional. This parkland reminded me quite a lot of Birkenhead Park on The Wirral and Hesketh Park in Southport and I found myself wondering if it might be the same landscape designer. Very mature trees laid out around cliff and lake features with plenty of tarmac paths to explore. In keeping with its hilltop location some of the paths are quite hilly so that might be an issue for those with mobility concerns. The Ashton Memorial sits prominently and impressively on the peak of the hill. There was a private wedding ceremony on the day we visited so it wasn’t possible to see inside. Still, an impressive exterior and quite photogenic. Apparently built as a tribute to one of the wives of the Lord of the estate (although I think references to ‘Lancashire’s Taj Mahal’ may be a slight exaggeration!). I felt some of the reviewers below were quite harsh about the cafe facilities. The young people running it were friendly and helpful. Menu limited but main clientele seems to be parents and young children (understandable in light of the adjoining butterfly house and creature cave) so that is perfectly reasonable. We did pop in the butterfly house and other small animal feature (£5 entry adults). Interesting but not exceptional (except possibly for the under-10’s 😀). I imagine this park would be a great place to spend a few hours (£4 all day parking) to let young children or grandchildren burn off some energy in the holidays or weekends. Worth a visit.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024
- Beverley OConwy County, United Kingdom33 contributionsWilliamston Park LancasterWhat a great place!! And very reasonable for families. Great Butterfly house and the girl working was so knowledgable about the plants and Butterflies on our visit on Thursday 18th April 2024. Would highly recommend. - Bren7 contributionsAbsolutely fantasticAbsolutely fantastic had a great time. Lots of wide open space for kids to enjoy with a wonderful view into and across the bay looking into the mountains in the lake district. The butterfly house is great but also has tortoises and terrapins then into another area with monkeys we didnt see but the meerkats were out loving life patrolling and looking out for threats while others relaxed and did some grooming. My daughters absolutely loved it and were so excited when they saw them it was truly a wonderful experience one to remember ☺ The staff were fantastic and one took a few photos for me so a big thank you for that 👍🏼Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 April 2024

Fully accessible to all but be aware some of the paths can be steep for wheel chair users. Their is ponds with lots of wildlife, and the tower and cafe and shop too. Some great views to be had of Heysham and Morecambe bay from top of park. Note Car parking is limited at the park with 2 Disabled spots onlyVisited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 June 2024

- ashgsfc2592 contributionsVery good experience£4 all day parking .The park is massive and well maintained. The playpark was big and had a variety of swings slides etc . The butterfly enclosure was amazing and a must visit . The cafe meals good value but kids meals and coffees and soft drinks a tad overpriced but overall a definite 9.9/10 from usVisited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 August 2024

Took my mum here today and she was looking forward to the butterfly House as she went many years ago. Firstly I was shocked they now charge £4 entrance fee and we were in there 10 mins maximum. In total we saw 2 butterflies. It was very disappointing. The animals and reptiles were also in small tanks /cages. Not impressed!

DO NOT GO TO THE CAFE !!!
Ordered two 'fish and chips' which were £5 each... they came out and as goujons and fries (not as advertised) and were super greasy... the grease spurted out as you bit in to it. We sent them back and did an exchange for a sandwich which was something like you'd get in a tesco meal deal.
The staff had no clue what they were doing and didn't bring out my food that I ordered separately before my parents did. When I asked, they even admitted they didn't know what they were doing. One staff member was sat on her phone and the others not doing anything. There was no opology for my food not coming out, and no comment about the so called ' fish and chips '
Alongside this, I ordered a brownie which was almost inedible, it was super dry and completely lacking flavour. I have a massive sweet tooth but literally couldn't eat it.
I presumed the place had just opened and that was the reason for it being unorganised and the food being awful however, the girl on her phone said they had been open for three weeks. So there is no excuse.
The gardens stank of urine, and the water was stangnent. It's like no one has looked after the place and it was super disappointing. Grass is overgrown and weeds everywhere!
Get it sorted!!

This is a fabulous park full of beautiful botanicals, there is a cafe, play area and butterfly house and behind the park wall, a nature trail, plenty to see and explore, a lovely duck pond, fountain and waterfall and hidden gems like an observatory ruins. Parking is payable in the carpark, but there are lots of streets around the park with free parking. There are toilets at the cafe too

We haven't had the pleasure of visiting this park before so whilst passing through thought we'd give it a whirl as heard good things. Even though we visited on a rainy day we still thoroughly enjoyed it. There is plenty to do and on the next roadmap change I can imagine you will be able to see even more like the meerkats, monkeys and butterflies. The cafe is slightly over priced but that's the only slight criticism. Can't wait to explore in the summer when we get a better day weather wise!

I visited mainly to see the memorial building which I had passed many times but never actually been too. What I discovered was an extensive municipal park which featured so much more like fountains, a butterfly house, a café, a children's play area, the Lancaster sundial on the site of what was once a bandstand, an artificial waterfall, some sculptures and a small folly known as the Temple. The park is extensively wooded, with many pathways winding among the trees. Overall I was really pleased that I explored the wider area and I will be coming back...and as for the memorial, well that was magnificent as are the views from the top if you can manage the steps.

After the castle, priory and lunch we headed up towards the park. Quite easy to navigate to walking wise but there is a bus that takes you there I hear (information centre in the storey building will tell you more). I'd say it's a 30 minute walk, quite steep so for us, was good to burn off our lunch. Some lovely views of Lancaster once you are up there, kids area, cafe and somewhere to look at animals but as we didn't bring our son this time we didn't explore most of the park, just went for the views and a nice walk. Will definitely do more next time.

Excellent park with good walks and views. The only aspect that ruins the visit is the cafe. The service was appalling and the staff not very helpful.
Apart from taking several attempts to get the order correct, when it eventually came ( 35 minutes after ordering) the egg and mayonnaise sandwich was a fried egg sandwich. The other sandwich and salad arrived without any cutlery to eat the salad with.
The person in front of me was told her wait for a sandwich would be ready 5 minutes, I was told 35 minutes when I queried this I was told there were other customers besides me! Not the sort of reply I expected.

Amazing urban Park, victoriana style. Fantastic view of Morecambe Bay and the lakes District. The Ashton memorial, if open, provides even a better view. The butterfly House is totally recommended as well as the cafe next to it, serving breakfast and light lunches and homemade cakes.

Having visited Lancaster several times over the years, and saying that we must visit Williamson Park and the Ashton memorial, we finally managed to go.The park is lovely with great views of the surrounding countryside. There are children’s play areas, a cafe, a small zoo and a butterfly house. The Ashton Memorial is a fine focal point at the top of the hill. Car parking is available nearby

How long is the walk from the car park to the butterfly house? Thinking of visiting when the weather is not that great but don’t want to get muddy etc
Written 13 February 2020
About 5 minutes uphill from the main car park, but I think you can drive right up from the Quernmore Road side, especially if you have a blue badge. Ring Lancaster council, perhaps for advice?
Written 18 February 2020
are there disabled parking spaces that are near without having to go up a hill ( walking)to get tot he butterfly place?
Written 15 January 2018
Hi, yes there are disabled spaces in the top car park near the café.

Hi,
How long does it take to walk around the park (excluding the animals and butterflies), is it pram friendly?
Thanks

Really sorry for the delay in replying, yes the park is pram friendly, there are a few steep climbs but it is manageable. Enjoy your visit.

Hi- I'm meeting some friends in Lancaster and a stroll through this park seems ideal.Could anyone tell me how long the wood land walk takes, or how long it takes to walk up to the Ashton Memorial from the Car Park?
Thanks
Written 7 July 2017
Ten minutes or so - there's a folley to investigate on the way up so you can stop half way and admire the view from up there before you arrive at the memorial. The woodland walk is a half hour ish.
Written 14 July 2017
Hi, how accessible is this park for wheelchair users / somebody on crutches please? Thanks.
Written 12 May 2017
Very accessible! You'll have no problem at all but you'll be restricted to the ground floor of the Ashton Memorial, however it won't deter your enjoyment of a great Park! Cafes great too and there's a disabled loo! Enjoy!

Can a coach drop people off at the top of the hill near the café to avoid walking up the hill from the car park
Written 19 May 2016
coaches can go to the top but I think an appointment is necessary to ensure a turning circle is kept free of parked cars.
