Owned by the serving monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, through the Duchy of Lancaster, Lancaster Castle is a wealth of English history.

Since being established by the Romans the castle has been a home to monarchs, a place of trial and execution, and a working prison right up until 2012. Still a crown court, the majority of the castle is now open to the public for the first time in over 1,000 years.

Since its opening in 2013, the Castle is gradually developing its offer of tours and events, as well as offering a cafe and gift shop in the grounds.

On a first visit to Lancaster we took a guided tour of the castle. You can't just wander around, you have to have a guided tour but this was a plus as Cameron our guide was excellent. He was young, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and confident enough to simply say he didn't know if asked something he wasn't sure about. We learned... More

Easy trip round the castle GUIDED TOURS ONLY..as its a working court. We were lucky on our visit that the court not sitting..it took about 90 mins to go round. Some of the tour is outside in the court yard and some indoors through small corridors. As the castle is undertaking some repair there is a lot of scaffolding but... More

I went to Lancaster castle with a friend visiting from the USA- we both loved it. It can best be described as a developing attraction as the castle has only recently changed use from a working prison. I think this added to the tour, as the prison wing was fascinating. The law courts fascinating. Although parts of the building were... More

I live close by but had never been for a tour around the castle. The guide was great fun and very informative - even when answering questions posed by several people. She allowed lots of time for us to soak up the atmosphere, which was very daunting at times. The drop room is the absolute star of the tour -... More

We visited today for the first time Our tour guide was the fantastic Cameron. He brought the history of the building alive and truly made the visit an enjoyable one. Good humour and lots of knowledge. We left today feeling we'd learnt an awful lot. Highly recommend a visit. Ps try the homemade cakes in the cafe. Worth the calories.

We drove up to Lancaster for the day to visit the castle/jail. We did the guided tour which took about 1hr 20mins (you can not go inside the buildings without a guide as it is a working court) only cost £8.00 per adult and was worth every penny. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of what happened there... More
