Visited by Henry VIII, besieged by Cromwell.... Unearth the amazing stories of Basing house, a nationally important historical site. This magnificent attraction dates from the Norman period, was the site of the largest private house in Tudor England and suffered at the hands of Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War. The visitor centre etnrance houses a gift shop and light refreshments. Look at our model of Basing House during the Tudor period, before its fall in 1645. Step inside the battled scarred Great Barn, dating from 1535 and experience the sights and sounds of the Civil War with our audio/ visual show. Download the Basing House audio tour for your smart phone or MP3 player via our website before you visit us. Free car parking can be found via postcode RG24 8AE with a pleasant short walk along the river Loddon to the Visitor Centre entrance.

Had a great time walking here and checking out the grounds, river and other natural sights. Inside was good and the history is amazing, better that we had people with us that told us more on top of the signs around the venue. walking into old basing after a must to see even more history

'Basing House' is the ruin of a once great 'House' in the fortified castle sense of the word and a chance to see how an old farm worked. Altho' the house itself is now a ruin, with only the cellars, some ground floor walls, kitchens, ovens wells and a moat left standing, a lot of work has gone into showing... More

If you're interested in English history especially the civil war then this site will impress. The site is little more than the foundations of a once great house and the mound fort it was built on but with the help of a guide, models, paintings and a bit of imagination it canbe brought to life. The site is much larger... More

This was once the largest private house in the country, it had over 350 rooms, it's reported that the ghost of Oliver Cromwell has been seen what ever. I suggest that you check the place out before you go so that you go on a weekend when you can see an enactment battle. There has been a house on the... More

Parked up and made our way towards the Barn it soon became evident that there was an event on, turned out to be a wedding (congratulations to the happy couple) it would have been good if the website could have indicated there was no access today and saved us a wasted trip. Beautiful setting walked along the river to the... More

We visited on a sunny Saturday morning and apart from one other person the ruins of Basing House were deserted. If you park in the suggested car park It is a long but very nice walk past the pub and along the old canal to reach the visitors centre. In the village itself there is plenty of on road parking... Not a lot of this historic house left, but very interesting none the less. Fantastic Lego model of original house gives idea on how impressive the house once was. We went to the sealed knot reenactment last weekend & if you haven't been then it's something really worth experiencing. There's guns, canons, poles, swords in their mock skirmish. It's totally...
