About
Waterford Greenway is a spectacular 46 km off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line which runs between Waterford and Dungarvan. From the Viking City alongside the River Suir, out by Mount Congreve Gardens, through Kilmacthomas, across eleven bridges, over three impressive viaducts and through a 400m long tunnel; with wonderful views of the Comeragh Mountains and Dungarvan Bay.

    Waterford Countryside unlocked
This is a beautiful velo route on the old Waterford to Cork train line that has now been extended right into Waterford city! We brought our own bikes but there is bike hire in both Waterford and Dungarvan, you can cycle one way and leave your bike in either town. Overall a lovely day out

The locals are so lucky to have this!
Me and my family went on the Suir Valley Railway, so we parked in their car park and then went for an hour's walk along the Greenway. As our kids are 3 and 6, we couldn't really see too much of it, but it was fantastic for the kids to have a safe and enjoyable ride on their bikes for as far as they could manage. I'd read that this was the best section for families with young kids, from Kilmeaden and it proved to be so. Nice and flat. I really hope to return one day to check out more if not all of the Greenway.

    Enjoyable Experience
I cycled the Greenway from Dungarvan to Waterford City. As none of the bike hire companies offer a shuttle service, I returned to Dungarvan via the (Cork) Bus Eireann service. There are a number of places along the route to stop for food including some nice picnic spots and children's playgrounds. There are public toilets at different location's along the route. There is also a bottle refill and bike pump station on the route (but only one that I noticed so better to be prepared regardless). I found the route to be very safe and well marked, the only downside was the roadworks on the last section on the approach to Waterford City meant you either have to cycle on a busy public road or push the bike along inside cones adjacent to the road. I had hoped to visit Congrieve Gardens on the way but while they provide some bike stands, there is nothing to secure your bike lock onto so I wasn't comfortable leaving the bike unattended. Otherwise I found the experience thoroughly enjoyable and suitable for all ages and abilities.

    Good Day Out
The Greenway is a really good idea fir a family day out. Bikes are easy to hire if cycling is what you want to do. We cycled from Waterford to Dungarvan. It’s full of beautiful scenery. If I was to go it again I would drive to the midway point at The Coach house , Kilmacthomas and ride to Dungarvan and back. It’s more scenic with viaducts, a tunnel and a sea view.to finish off with. The Coach House also does fantastic food.

    Waterford
Must go! Waterford is a city that effortlessly intertwines history and modernity. Its charming streets echo with tales of Viking settlements and medieval heritage, while contemporary shops and eateries add a vibrant touch. The iconic Waterford Crystal is a testament to the city's craftsmanship, and the quayside offers a picturesque stroll along the River Suir. With friendly locals and a welcoming atmosphere, Waterford provides a delightful blend of cultural richness and contemporary allure.

    Excellent greenway amenity
You can hire a bicycle right in the city centre 200 metres from Granville hotel where we stayed €25 for the day. Then it's just another 300 metres along the quayside to the start of the greenway which extends all the way to Dungarven approx 60 kilometres. The greenway was constricted along the old railway line from Dungarven to Waterford We rode from Waterford towards Dungarven for approx 15 kilometres and back, there is a cafe and facilities at around 10 kilometres. This is an excellent amenity for both walking and cycling

    Exhausting, but fun!
It was our second time there... First time back in August 2023 my friends said that we were just lucky to had made it to Dungarvan and back in one day. So we accepted the challenge and off we went to 1) prove them wrong 2) prove to ourselves that we can do it. Nice weather will help appreciate the scenery. Leaving Waterford around 09:15am marks your arrival to Dungarvan for roughly 12:30pm - just for lunch (on those rental bikes, not electric, not hybrid). Then, after almost 45 min. break, you will start the incline from Dungarvan towards the tunnel, and then onward to Waterford. Let's face it: one way is childishly easy, almost pleasant, but... Try a return trip in one day ;-p Oh, and have that brewski once you have arrived.

A mostly flat ride along what used to be a train line between Waterford and Dungarvan.
Plenty of facilities along the way, I rode out along this and then returned via the Copper Coast - which was a great combination.
