I’m not religious but this place is a magical window into Irish heritage. The ruins are stunning with two round towers. The roads are windy to get there. It’s so beautiful especially on the odd clear day down to the Shannon. Not touristy but lovely.

This belongs to the must see and visit ruins on the river Shannon. For those Coming by boat it has a easy harbour and usually space for mooring. The ruins and museum has also a small coffee shop, good self made food, very packed. The...More

We had time on our last day in Ireland driving from Galway to the Dublin Airport and was looking for one more "classic" Irish thing to see. Clonmacnoise fit the bill. Located a bit off the main highway, it is worth the drive to get...More

This appreciate and understand this ancient memorial site's (and others like it) importance to preserving literacy and education in general through the "dark age" after the fell of the Roman empire you need to take time. The guided very detailed tour just takes time and...More

Went with hubby children and grandchildren 8 bodies in all so it was expensive, it was on the bucket list so had to be done, very pleasant staff and the guide very knowledgeable. Not somewhere you would visit twice but nice all the same

Seems an awful long time ago that I first passed some old ruins when boating/fishing down the Shannon in the 1970's. There is a lot more on this site these days. Whilst it has always been an interesting place to visit the recent visitors centre...More

Clonmacnoise exceeded my expectations. The visitors centre was excellent and informative. There's a small area to walk through with some of the protected stones with information beside each exhibit. There's also a video every hour or so which gives the background for the site which...More

Took a long detour to get to the ancient Clonmacnoise but worth the effort. Make sure you watch the short animated video and see the inside exhibition as well as walking around the ruins and gravestones

Great historic place to visit. Good visitor centre providing plenty of info. Joined a tour and well worth it to get a good history of the site. A lovely place to spend some time, quiet, fantastic views and of course the hisyory of the site.

You don’t need to take the tour! As per the other comment the site does not open until 10am so really depends on how long you have til your next destination. Even an hour at Clonmacnoise is worth the visit

Heather, We had a car. Sans that, I would think there would be local coach tours?
