- JamesGrandfieldDublin, Ireland85 contributionsGreat Visitor Centre, boat trip & foodMy wife, baby & myself had a fantastic experience at the Visitor Centre. A great source of knowledge and history of the stunning Skellig Islands and in particular the monastic settlements on Skellig Michael. There's even a set of old entry gates that were damaged by a storm and were recovered by divers at the entrance to the tour. Lots of photos and structures recreated that gives you a very personal and unique experience of this UNESCO heritage site. The restaurant serves absolutely delicious food, highly recommended. The staff are terrific and very helpful and help make the whole experience even more memorable. Remember; you can also book the fantastic boat tour around these iconic islands or land on Skellig Michael. Well worth it!Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that you and your family had a fantastic experience at the Visitor Centre. It's great to know you appreciated the knowledge and history shared about the Skellig Islands and the monastic settlements on Skellig Michael. - Excursion1121003756520 contributionsWe Love the SkelligsThe Skellig Experience Visitor Center was fantastic. John and his wife were excellent hosts at the Skellig Experience Center - they were very kind and helpful. Also John was very responsive prior to our trip there from Killarney by answering weather related questions. The information and displays at the Center were superb – take the time to read everything. We bought some nice gifts at the lovely gift shop. The Boat Trip around Little Skellig and Skellig Michael was awe inspiring. Our boatman was very informative about the islands and wildlife - excellent job!. We will tell all our friends about this gem of Ireland and the world. The Seabirds, Geology, and History are inspirational. Fantastic trip - next time we will try a landing and climb the steps at Skellig Michael!Thank you for your fantastic review! We’re thrilled to hear you had a great experience at the Skellig Experience Visitor Centre. John and Kathleen appreciate your kind words and are always happy to help. I would say that the end product is pretty much the same. Once you are on Skellig Michael, all tours are handed over to the island's staff. - Bill MWarwickshire, United Kingdom204 contributionsThe restaurant/cafe is well worth a visit. Great food served by great staff! If you choose not to do the tour then the restaurant is highly recommended. No matter what the weather the staff here will brighten your day with a warm cheery smile and Irish welcome to match. With a great range of food you are spoilt for choice. The sandwiches are a real treat freshly made to order with generous fillings on a choice of bread. The scones are scrumptious served warm with lashings of cream and Jam but make sure to put the jam or is it cream on first. The views over Port Magee and out towards the Skellig’s are fantastic and on a sunny day a seat outside is recommended. Frequented by locals and tourists alike you won’t be disappointed.Thank you for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed our restaurant. - Nathan S1 contributionFun and informativePre- trip: show up 30-45 minutes before the trip. The exhibit staff showed us several movies (one safety related and the other background about the island). Trip: The boat ride to the island took about an hour, and gave us wristbands to identify which boat we needed to find when it was time to return, and let us know when to be back on the dock for the return trip. On the island there is a small 2 stall restroom with hand sanitizer (no running water). The guides gave clear directions about how to safely navigate the steps and monetary site. Two guides were at the top of the hike, and one gave a short tall about the history of the island. The 618ish steps were a challenge, but doable if you take breaks and follow the safety guidelines.Thank you for your detailed review! We're pleased to hear that you found the pre-trip movies on safety and the island's background helpful. We're glad the wristbands helped with organization. It's great to know that our guides provided clear directions and valuable information about navigating the steps and the monastic site. The 618 steps are indeed a challenge, but with breaks and safety guidelines, they are doable. We'll pass along your feedback about no running water to the guides on the island. We booked The Ultimate Skellig Coast Tour on the understanding that it was a guided tour. Instead we were provided with headsets that had 6 pre-recorded audio clips. The audio quality was very poor on both our headsets, barely audible.
The "guide"'s role seemed to be mostly to look after the passengers who were seasick. The boat trip was incredibly rough. It had been cancelled two days in a row due to the weather but we were told it was safe to go on that day.
I have visited most of the islands around Ireland and have never before been fearful on a boat. I did not feel safe for most of the journey. I've been on bigger boats on calmer seas where lifejackets were mandatory and I am surprised they were not offered for this trip.
More briefing should have been given to passengers about the sea conditions outside of the harbour so we could have made informed decisions about taking the trip. More info also about appropriate clothing as only 4 of the 12 seats have any shelter from the rain/sea, and there were a few inches of seawater flowing across the deck, covering most passengers' shoes.
This trip, given the weather conditions, would definitely not have been suitable for nervous passengers, children or anyone with mobility issues.

We took a boat trip from the Skellig Experience around Skellig Michael & it was tough going! It was a calm, dry August day but within minutes we were soaked to the skin from spray from the boat (despite rain jackets & hats)! There is also indoor seating available but the boat driver advised us against it. It was a cold, wet trip back. The 2 hour round boat trip is also quite rough & not suitable for those who suffer from travel sickness. The islands themselves are beautiful but the trip overall was not enjoyable.

Trip on the boat to view The Skelligs was great. It was a little choppy and a few people felt a bit sick, but that's beyond anyone's control. The exhibit area is small but lots of interesting things to look at and the small film shown gives you the history. A bit disappointing for me, was that we were left waiting for quite a while (over 45 mins) in the restaurant when we came back for a kids meal, sandwich and tea despite there being a small number of customers. We were in a hurry to get back on the road as we had to get to Killarney and it delayed us. We'd to ask twice about our order. A map I wanted to buy in the shop was also not available. I enjoyed the experience overall and it was amazing to be out near Skellig Michael. We got some incredible photo's and overcame the queasy feeling we had at the start of the trip for about 20mins.

Hello Yvonne,
Thank you for your kind review. I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed the boat trip (minus the sea conditions) as well as your visit to our Exhibition and film show. I'm terribly sorry to hear you were waiting a substantial time for your meal. I understand this must have been frustrating especially on a tight schedule. Our staff are making every effort to provide a comfortable experience for our customers while abiding by all government guidelines. I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of your time at The Skellig Experience and we would love to welcome you back in the near future. Best wishes, Lisa

Since I’ve returned to Dublin this week it’s been on my mind to write a review to thank John at The Skellig Experience for his lovely way and enthusiasm about the area and the Skelligs. John, an absolute gentleman looked after myself and my Scottish partner when we visited the museum last week when staying on the island. We were disappointed to have learned previously that the boat tours around Skellig had finished for the season two weeks before our trip to Kerry. When I mentioned this to John he took my number to call me the next morning, seas were expected to be calm. True to John’s word we got the call at 10am and were on our way to the Skelligs at 12 along with 6 others. It turned out, the boat we took was the last trip til the season starts again next March. We were very lucky to have popped into the Skellig Experience Museum that day. Their beautiful restaurant overlooks the bay and Portmagee with floor to ceiling glass windows in addition to outdoor seating. Thank you John for your lovely way about you, for relaying the history to us and for looking after us. We came away from Valentia island, 2 very happy people.

This is the first time I give a one star rate in any travel reviews.
I was very excited to visit Skellig Michael. I planed the trip to Ring of Kerry with Skellig the highlight. I knew I was slow so I did studies before I went. The Skellig visitor center was well organized and educational. The restaurant provided nice view of Portmagee and good chowder. But the boat tour was very disappointing.
I arrived early to the center and the dock. There were two rows of seats in the middle of the boat, facing opposite side. I asked the driver which side would face Skellig when we got near, would he drive clock or counter clockwise around the island. He answered either side was fine, he would switch direction so both sides could see well. He did switch direction at the small Skellig to see birds. However, my side never faced the big Skellig which was the main point of the tour. If I could I won't mind just standing up and turn around to have better look. But it was windy we had to sit down to stable ourselves. All I could do was to twist my body, stretch my neck to watch behind other people's head and arms (for they lift phones to take video). Honestly I clearly saw one new lighthouse (there are two on the island), a dock/landing, some bush and rocks that could be on any island. I didn't see the ancient ruins. The driver/guide pointed somethings on the island. But again it was at my back side. I couldn't see what he was pointing.
I was saddened by the experience of the boat tour. I didn't know more about Skellig than before I went.
To appreciate the tour I tried my best to take pictures of random parts of the Skellig. Hopefully some of them caught interesting spots.

Hello Cindy,
We are very sorry to hear you did not enjoy your time on our Skellig Michael Sea Cruise. Our Skellig Cruises offer up close views of both islands and allow you to experience the wildlife along the way. We are sorry to hear you did not feel you got to experience these views on tour. We will of course take this into consideration for future tours and we hope that we can welcome you back on tour again in the near future and provide you with a much more memorable experience.

Lovely informative visitor centre (with a nice cafe on-site), well worth visiting before the boat trip. Fantastic boat trip. The skipper of the boat went right up to and around Skellig Micheal and Skellig Beag. He slowed and stopped the boat to point out all the key sights - giving us plenty of time to look and take photos. Helpful, friendly staff in all areas of the experience. Good value at 40 euros a head.

The Skellig Experience is quite a unique place, located in a small bunker type building right off the bridge from Portmagee. The story is well told and the exhibit is worth seeing. We were greeted by a distinguished gentleman who was obviously proud of his knowledge and experience at the center. Our boat ride was guided by the wonderful and entertaining Elizabeth. She told great stories of the history and adventures of the Monks who settled on Skellig Michael. The boat ride out to the island is 90 minutes in rough seas on a good day. As with any trip like this, you are at the mercy of the Wild Atlantic Way. We did not choose to get off the boat to make the trek to the top, but I highly recommend it for those who are fit to walk the 680 steps. This place is magical and mystical and has a Hollywood connection as well.

We visited the attraction as part of a day trip to Valentia Island. It is a nice enough stop and the adult admission price is fine, however €3 for a 2 year old is ridiculous as it's all written information that went over our little boys head. Free under 3's would be more appropriate rather than a blanket child fee. The information film was nice but a little old-fashioned. The staff were very friendly & the little shop nicely stocked. I left feeling that it could be so much more and disappointed that it wasn't.

The S.E. was excellent precursor to climbing the Scellig Michael. Very Interesting and prepares you for what's ahead. Although the weather wasn't great and the boat journey was rough due to choppy waters, I felt a great sense of admiration for these men who go out to sea daily. It takes great skill to operate a boat in challenging conditions. We arrived safely and climb to the top of Scellig Michael. Great adventure! Enjoyed the day.

Hello Mary,
Thank you for your wonderful review. I agree that the story of Skellig Michael is incredible and it's incredible to think of the harsh conditions these monks faced at Skellig. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your time on tour with us and would love to welcome you back to The Skellig Experience Visitor Centre again in the near future. Best wishes, Lisa

Is there some sort of bridge that connects or ferry that connects Portmagee with this Skellig Experience Museum?
Thank you!
Alex

Very large bridge, which you can also drive across, it is the main route into Valentia Island. You can get a boat too, but it is not really necessary, you can walk, there is a path/sidewalk/pavement on the Bridge.
