My friend and I decided to take this path in Howth, and it was definitely the best decision we could make! The views are magical while the path - depending on the level you choose - is not very hard and does not require any particular athletic skills, so it would suit everybody.

Once you get to the top it’s lovely but at least the first half hour of the walk you are on a narrow road behind a fence. We had 90 minutes to hike and by the look of the map and name of the hike we thought we’d be able to see the ocean. An hour of our hike felt like basically walking through someone’s alley. We were either going to do this or the Bray cliff walk. I think we chose wrong. But, as I said, once you get to the top, it is lovely.

This was one of the highlight of our Ireland trip, partly because we had a good weather day. Train station is near the harbor. Trail to the cliffs starts at the end of main street. Restaurants all over. Cliff walk is busy but beautiful. We went past the lighthouse and past the busy part of the trail which we enjoyed, but we did not realize how far the trail goes because the map does not show distance. We were 3 and a half hours out and ten miles from our start before we decided to return the Carraugh (sp?) Road and then still had over an hour to get back to town. The visitor center did not explain how that the end of the loop around the penisula included a very steep hill (where we decided to take the road back to Houth.) Wish this review would let me post pictures as it was very scenic. Definitely get out of Dublin to see the coast. Later we went to the west coast, but this was just as pretty for the wildflowers and seabirds up close.

My husband and I are active hikers and needed to be away from the city. This was the perfect escape. Only a few hours of hiking to be had, and it lead you back into town where you could pick up a snack or lunch.
The locals were welcoming and talked to us with great interest. We could see the ferry coming back from the UK and the cargo ships coming in. We also saw seals playing in the water. One of the highlights of our trip for sure!

This is a nice hike along the cliffs with some wildlife below and not to much of an incline. Some of the path is close to the edge. The view of the lighthouse below was picturesque.

I enjoyed walking along the cliff path despite some rain and wind. The views are breathtaking. I also liked to grasp a view on one of the typically Irish houses here and there. The path, however, is not a secret any more as you run into many other tourists from all around the world.

Howth is just a short trip from Dublin but feels like a place far away. Going for this walk was a wonderful use of a good part of the day. Our group enjoyed ourselves.

If you love hiking, Howth is the place for you. It is only 30 minutes by DART train from Dublin city center and the actual hiking can take anywhere for 1 to 6 hours depending on your pace and how much you explore the trails. The cliff path loop was my favorite of the paths, mainly because of the views. Also, the paths in the center of Howth are poorly marked so the cliff path loop is obviously easier to navigate.

Keep an eye out for trails down to the waterfront since there are some nice rocky beaches that you can hike down to. The water was really cold in April (as expected), but on a warm day, it is still really nice to lay out for a little. Keep an eye out for seals and dolphins while you are hiking as well. I saw one hanging out near a beach for a while which was really cool.

There are some good seafood places as well as some other good food options at the howth harbor, but it is a bit touristy.

I would suggest going early in the morning and spending half or three quarters of the day in Howth. You can take a DART train to the Howth station. I took the train from the Tara street stop and it's €6.25 for adult return without the leap card. I did not end up doing the entire purple loop because I wanted to get back to Dublin for the afternoon. You are very high up during this walk, so if you are terrified of heights, you might not want to do this walk, particularly because the wind blows a lot on the path, and the path is narrow. One of the main problems with this walk is that it is not that close to the DART station. You will have to walk 20-25 minutes just to get to the start of the trail, which is a bit annoying, but the views are stunning once you start walking around.
