Love the RHA which is a visual arts society run by artists. A superb city centre gallery space also offering various art classes as well as regular exhibition. In particular their Annual Exhibition is fantastic and I love to visit it to see the wealth of contemporary Irish art selected via open submission - paint, sculpture, print, photography, drawing and architecture - it's all here, and it's all fantastic.

I regularly visit this art gallery, depending on the rotating exhibitions it stages. It is located in Dublin city centre, a short walk from St Stephens Green. It is a lovely space that re-opened after modernisation in recent years. Entrance is normally free and the works are usually available for purchase.
The RHA Annual Exhibition is one of Ireland’s most important artistic events. Currently the 2012 one is taking place and will be available till the 18th August. I recently visited it and was very impressed with the variety and quality of exhibits. This year is one of the largest with various art forms including paintings, sculpture, photography and architectural models.
Many artists are featured, both well known and relatively unknown, across a broad range of genres -realism, landscape, portrait and self-portrait and still-life.
If you would like to spend an hour or so in a pleasant gallery, I recommend a visit to the Academy.

A good variety of art...portrait, abstract, photography etc. in a lovely modern clean space.
A friendly welcome and its free!
The food and sandwhiches in the restaurant looked and smelled good.

While it was a little out of the way for me, and it was cold and drizzly into the bargain, the twenty minute walk to here was worthwhile, if not just for the portraits on display in the main foyer. The gallery on the ground floor to the left had a varied selection of works, many worthy of note. The other galleries were equally impressive even though some of the work wouldn't necessarily be my usual taste. Plus the little cafe at the front provides a welcome rest from all the walking around.
The RHA is free - another reason not to miss it.

Great purpose-built gallery showcasing contemporary Irish art hidden away in the middle of Georgian Dublin. Lovely cafe & shop on site.

Those were the words that came from my husband who was reluctant at first to enter this magnificent gem of eclectic art - all for free.

The 186th Annual Exhibition is currently running at the RHA until 11th June, so although I was delighted to be invited to an evening preview of the exhibition earlier in March, there is plenty of time to go and feast my eyes again. The RHA in its own right is a wonderful building on Ely Place (just a minute or two's stroll from St. Stephen's Green) and worthy of a leisurely visit. Within the Exhibition, some galleries are given over to sculpture or photographic art, while small pieces adorn the wall of the main stairwell between ground and first floors. It takes some time to get around this well hung exhibition, so when you have had your fill of culture, a re-fuelling stop at Coppa is a good idea. Don't miss a visit.

I visited the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), during my recent trip to Dublin. The gallery is tucked away amidst Georgian houses in the Southside of the city. It is teeming with wonderful contemporary art represented in multiple mediums that seem to cover every available space, including the walls. Also, the gallery is quite spacious, so you have to opportunity to look around without feeling closed in or rushed. Some of the highlights from my visit included: #yesequality, by Joe Caslin; Carer, Catherine Creaney; Youth, by Una Sealy; and Memory vessels-stories of loss, by Olga Fitzpatrick. The latter was a brilliant audio installation that featured individuals telling stories pertaining to loss, as the title suggests. If you’re in Dublin and love multimedia, contemporary art you should definitely visit RHA.

The RHA galleries always exhibit a fantastic variety of works in different mediums and interesting video installations. An added attraction is the occassional weekend lunchtime recitals.
