Thursday 4th August we were walking about the streets of Dublin exploring sights and the landmarks in the City.
It was also a bit of a trip down memory lane as I grew up in Dublin many years ago.
Henry Street a main pedestrian shopping Street, is located off O'Connell Street along the side of the GPO.
Standing at the top of the street, and visible from along way down the street, stands the Spike of Dublin.
It was once a thriving busy street which was lined with department stores, clothing shops, trendy boutiques and so much more.
When we visited w number of shops were closed, boarded up and covered in graffiti.
The large building that was once the home of the iconic Roches Stores and then Debenhams now stands empty. This added to the depressed feel and look of this once top shopping street.
The other main store, Arnotts did little to raise the spirit of the litter strewn street. The Ilac Shopping Mall can be accessed from here.
Perhaps the street and it's occupants and the missing ones need some more time to bounce back from the economic effects of the global pandemic.
One of it's side streets is the once bustling market street, Moore Street (reviewed separately).

Awesome street where you can find lots of stores and it's one of the most popular streets in Dublin. Crowded place every time and near other famous places and streets of Dublin, such as Grafton St. Talbot St. and so on.
Really good place to visit and buy stuffs and souvenirs.

There are two big street shopping areas in Dublin - Grafton St & Henry St. Having been to both I recommend Henry St for those who are die-hard shoppers. You will find the usual brands there - M&S, Debenhams, Forever 21, Zara, etc. BUT there are other brands probably not so recognised yet they have good stuff. Ladies - recommend going to a shop at the top of Henry St called "noname". There are lots of street performers out here as well, which add to your shopping experience. The best thing about Henry St is that it is right in the middle of the city centre so you can stroll around and explore the rest of Dublin city, all the way from Parnell Rise to Liffey river. Moore St branches off from Henry St where you can find lots of fresh fruit, fast food and other local produce. Henry St provides a view of the local life. Must do.

It's a close-run thing (Grafton Street definitely has a lot to offer), but Henry Street is arguably THE premier shopping area in Dublin.
When you turn the corner from the historic GPO building you're entering a lively & attractive pedestrianised neighbourhood, with many impressive shops and a variety of food outlets. Named after an Earl of Drogheda, Henry Moore, the street itself only runs as far as the junction with Liffey Street, but "unofficially" many extend its length into what's actually Mary Street.
At the top of the street, a side entrance to the GPO was once the hall-door of our National Broadcasting Station, then known as Radio Eireann - they moved to Donnybrook in the 1960s, becoming RTE. A bit further down, you meet Moore Street on your right, home to a colourful array of market stalls, presided over by (mainly) "True Dubs".
Our favourite shop is Ireland's largest department store, Arnotts, which seems to stock practically everything (apart from groceries) and we enjoyed a coffee in the Bewley's cafe on the Abbey Street side, before doing our serious business in the store's furniture department.
We also spent some time in the nearby Debenham's (which used be "Roches Stores") and Marks & Spencer's, making some smaller purchases. Along the way, we "window-shopped" at a number of the many other attractive shops on the street, and paid a brief visit to "The Jervis Centre".
We've been told that over 30 million people a year visit the Henry Street area during normal shopping hours, and they can't all be wrong, can they ?
By the way, on our way back from our most recent shopping expedition, we once again enjoyed the great view of "The Spire" from the stretch of Henry Street between Liffey Street and Moore Street - you should too !

This street in the heart of the city centre offers a wide variety of shopping for every type and for every one.Many big stores like Debenhams,Zara,Arnots are there.Two shopping malls like Jervis and Ilac offer many good brands.
Spar is in front of the street and great landmarks like Rotunda hospital,General post office,O'Connell bridge and others are at walking distance.Imax Multiplex Theatre ,many restaurants are at few moment's walk.
I recommend it for shopping more than Grafton street.

Great shopping - close to Jervis Shopping Centre and Arnotts. I still liked walking along Grafton Street but definitely worth the walk across the River Liffey to see all the sights along Henry Street...

Dublin has two known shopping streets. 1. Grafton Street and, 2. Henry Street.
What should be pointed out? Grafton Street is high end shopping...but as this is a review for Henry, let's keep to that. If you are at the Spire, facing it, and see the GPO on your left, you are facing North and Henry Street is to your immediate left and right, or West and East, respectively. This is important!
Henry Street to your Left (West) is the nicer part of the street with better shopping. To the Right (East) is older stores like Guiney's and a few others, and is not as nice...but certainly not dangerous.
There are some great points of Henry Street. It is home to 2 shopping centres, 1. Ilac and 2. Jervis. You will also find the well known stores like, River Island, TK Maxx, Arnotts, Dunnes, Penneys, and many more.

Every time we come to this area - and we do so regularly, while not ignoring the rival Grafton Street area - we wonder why Henry Street seems to be under-appreciated in terms of image & reputation. There's surely everything you need here in terms of stores - Arnotts is brilliant - cafes, not to mention atmosphere, and right now the physical environment is definitely superior to the southside rival.
Once again we weighed-up potential purchases of good quality clothes and shoes, and spent our Euros here, stopping for a break at the consistently enjoyable Bewley's @ Arnotts cafe/snackbar.
And if you're a visitor to Dublin, bear in mind that Henry Street is just off O'Connell Street where you should take-in the historic General Post Office (GPO) and the various monuments/statues, especially the O'Connell Monument (at the southern end), the Larkin Statue (in the middle) & the Parnell Monument (at the north end of the street). There's lots of Irish history here!

Grafton street may be nicer but henry street is more practical with more shops and places to eat nearby.

Henry Street is one of the main shopping areas in Central Dublin, Now the question you ask kind of depends on what you are looking for.
There is a really nice Pub/restaurant on Mary Street called the Church, have a look at the website, just search Church and Mary street it should show itself, Mary Street is a continuation of Henry street to the west, literally a stones throw, highly recommended,
But then depending on what sort of food you want, and how much you want to spend, there is basically everything in the surrounding streets, from cheap bakery cafes, to upmarket hotel tea rooms to lively pubs to takeaways to any ethnic cuisine you can think of.
Maybe post a reply here telling us what you like and maybe what you'd consider a good price for let's say a three course meal with drinks.
I still though recommend the church, it is a lovely place.
I see you are from Brighton, I am from London originally and used to cycle down there every year, great town!

There are lots of bars and restaurants but I cannot name one specificially. It is a very popular area so I am 100% sure that there are excellent quality bars and restaurants around.
I hope this helps but naming one I cannot.
