Thursday 4th August walking around the streets of Dublin sightseeing and exploring.
We spotted this memorial in Beresford Place near the Customs Home and under the loop line bridge.
The monument is dedicated to James Connolly, who was an Irish republican, socialist and trade union leader.
Connolly was born on the 5th June 1868 in Edinburgh to Irish parents, he was executed on 12th May 1916, Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, aged almost 48. He was buried in Arbour Hill Prison in Dublin.
This memorial depicts a bronze statue James Connolly standing in front of a granite wall as if addressing a crowd. Behind the statue is the figure of the Plough and the Stars, the emblem of the Irish Citizen Army.
It is rather fitting that the memorial is located in an area where Connolly often addressed rallies and Liberty hall, theTrade Union headquarters is nearby.
Across the base of the granite wall, in bronze lettering, is one of Connolly"s most famous quotes:- "The cause of Labour is the cause of Ireland. The cause of Ireland is the cause of Labour"
The memorial was unveiled by the Irish President, Mary Robinson on 12th May 1996, on the 80th anniversary of his execution.
Also, James Connolly was a leader in the 1916 Uprising and one of the seven signatories of the Irish Proclamation of Independence (1916).
The memorial did look as it needed a bit of a clean as there was green slime on parts of the granite wall, it looked a bit neglected.

James Connolly (1868-1916) was a leader in the Easter Rising (1916). Although the Easter Rising was put down savagely by the British, the vicious British reaction caused a revolution in Ireland. Connolly was captured by the British. He had been badly wounded, but was shot in his chair by a British firing squad.

James Connolly was a leader of the 1916 Easter Rising. Like poet Padraig Pearse and the others, he was executed by the British. Unlike the other leaders, he was wounded in the rising and had to be strapped to a chair when he faced the British firing squad. It was his execution more than any other that roused Irish nationalism that resulted in the Irish War of Independence.

I came across this statue of one of Ireland's most famous rebels of the Easter Rising of 1916 by sheer accident. It was under a railway bridge, away from anywhere, when I would have thought that it was better placed close to the Post Office building where the fighting took place.

The memorial statue for James Connolly right by the banks of the river Liffey is really beautiful, reflecting the importance and ideals of the great socialist and patriot. Every passer-by should take some time to stop and think about what might have been had he not been killed in 1916...

Irish history at its best. Like the Molly Malone stutue it is an excellent sculpture, well made, designed and finished. A tribute to the man himself.

This is probably one of those monuments that mean more to you if you know the history of the man. James Connolly was a socialist politician who was heavily involved in Irelands fight for independence from Britain, and was actually executed for his involvement in the Easter Rising in 1916. As such, he is a key figure in the history of Irish independence.
The monument is a small and relatively simple statue standing in front of a small wall. As monuments go, it is quite simple. Worth a look to see this dedication to the man who played a major part in shaping Ireland as we know it today, but I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.

This is an excellent statue of James Connolly and surrounding detail, but I would've thought that what he did during the Irish Socialist Movement and 1916 Easter Rising, would've placed this memorial statue at a more befitting location in the capital.

Eamon O'Doherty (1939-2011) was one of Ireland's most prolific sculptors. His life size bronze sculpture of labour leader James Connolly has as its backdrop the Starry Plough, an international symbol of the labour movement. The sculpture was a commission from Liberty Hall across the street which is the home of the various trade unions in Ireland. Connolly was a socialist and trade union leader who partook in the Easter Rising of 1916 as leader of the Citizen Army. He was wounded during the fighting in the GPO (General Post Office) and executed sitting down by firing squad in Kilmainham Gaol.
