Underneath the church are five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin's most influential 17th, 18th and 19th century families, including the legendary Shears brothers and the highly decorated coffins of the Earl's of Leitrim. Since Victorian times visitors have descended the vault steps to see the mummies and Bram Stoker, creator of the "Dracula" stories is believed to have visited the vaults in the company of his family. In one vault can be seen the remains of the "Crusader" though in fact he is only 650 years dead. The early visitors to the vaults were responsible for many of the myths and legends surrounding the bodies, though modern scientific investigations have cast doubts on many of these stories. Nevertheless, a visit to the Crypts to see the historic mummies is a remarkable experience.

The church is beautiful and a page out of the 1700s. The crypts are spooky and surreal; guide was a nice fellow that gave a theatrical tour.

This place was recommended me by a doctor in Scotland and it didn't disappoint. A beautiful old church with many secrets, the best being the mummified remains of Irish heroes in the crypt below. Very creepy but well worth the visit.

My visit to St Michan's left a lot to be desired. We were greeted by a friendly guide, who interacted well with all members of the tour group. While it was really interesting and a strangely ominous experience seeing those mummified remains. There was a...More

I wasn't a fan of the tone adopted by our guide. While he was friendly and engaging, he seemed to be more focussed on providing a bit of theatre than about contextualising the history of the site. Considering the fact that the site involves viewing...More

We went there to visit the undergroud catacombs. It was an interesting guided tour but the catacombs are really small; dont't think you're going to spend a lot of time inside...

Well worth finding this unique spot with mummified remains in plain sight. The toru guide was a bit quirky, and the crypts a bit claustrophobic, but this is really unusual and in the heart of the oldest part of the city.

This was something I'll never forget! I can't believe we were actually sanding within inches of coffins and mummies with no barrier except an iron gate! It was spooky in the middle of the afternoon, I could never go down there at night. Great tour...More

Very interesting, a little disturbing. Tour guide was fantastic with a great since of humor. Pricing was reasonable. Wear comfortable shoes and mind your head.

We weren't expecting to have such a fun tour guide! He was so knowledgeable and kept us laughing down in the crypts! Very interesting place. Glad we went.

The draw of St. Michan's is the guided crypt tour, and it is definitely worth it for the guide alone! The tour was informative and entertaining, although probably not recommended for the squeamish/claustrophobic as the entrance to the crypts themselves are a bit of a...More

Yes, there are tours throughout the day, never any formal times, just present yourself at the door and ask, you might have to wait no more than 30 minutes for a tour to start. Not sure when they close.

No, we just showed up during hours they were open and paid a gentleman the fee and waited in the pretty church for a tour guide, who showed up eventually. This operation is very informal, but I imagine the fees we curious... More
