In all the years of visiting Dublin and walking in Pheonix park we never knew this centre was here. We took the 99 bus near Houston station which does a circular run up the park to the centre and back. The centre is free and informative. There's a lift to the upper floor and toilets in the cafe next door.

Informative and motivated guide
A sweet little castle where we had a private tour, because there are not many people. Our guide was very motivated, and it is an experience I would recommend, especially of you want to get a little bit out of the main city.

Ashtown castle itself is quite small, and to be honest, there is not too much to see inside. However, I enjoyed a brilliant tour - I learned so much about Irish history, a lot more than in many of Dublin's main attraction.
Should you happen to visit Phoenix Park, make sure to drop by in the visitor center (which has an interesting small exhibition), and do a tour of Ashtown castle. Imho, it was really really worth it.
in case you need to bridge the waiting time for the tour, go to the café, which is excellent. on two different occasions, I had different kind of coffees, and had a sandwich, all excellent. I was told this is a popular meeting point for locals. Or just grab a coffee to go, and visit the beautiful gardens next to the café.

Very much enjoyed our tour of Ashtown Castle which has a fascinating history. Our tour guide, Thomas, was very friendly and knowledgeable and brought the history of the castle to life. Highly recommend this tour.

Disgusting unisex toilets !!!
I have been here for coffee on three successive days over the Bank Holiday, each time the experience was ruined by multiple dogs barking at each other.
Perhaps the owners could leave dogs in their cars or control their pets.
Or better still, the operators could prohibit dogs on the premises --- why wait until a child is savaged and then face an insurance claim.
Just saying

It’s a marvellous destination in the marvellous Park. From the walled garden to the fascinating Castle there is much to enjoy here.
Dedicated gardeners in the enclosed garden produce fine flora encompassing fruits and vegetables in addition to highly regarded honey.
A guided tour of the Castle is well worth joining to hear an engaging account of its back-story. A lovely Café provides grand fare and if the weather is favourable seating in the courtyard is relaxing and enjoyable.

The place is spoiled by the fact the toilets are mixed sex.
I went with my two daughters age 5 and 6 and they needed to use the bathroom.
It felt so uncomfortable standing in the queue with men. I think females need separate facilities for dignity and safety. The men in the queue also looked uncomfortable with the set up.
Normally, in ladies toilets i feel comfortable letting my 6 year old wash her hands by herself while i am in the cubicle with her sister. With this set up, i needed to bring both of them into the cubicle as i did not want to leave her washing her hands alone with men that are strangers right next to her.
This is unsafe and inappropriate.

Lovely old castle, excellent visitor centre and cafe. I come here regulary for a wander around the walled garden and a picnic with my girls aged 12 and 15. Today I met a friend with her 2 girls who are the same age and we were all dismayed that the toilets are now unisex. Predictably enough they were in a disgusting state and I saw many women turn away when they saw the unisex sign. I do not feel comfortable allowing my daughters to use unisex bathrooms unaccompanied for saftey reasons.
Poor show. Very disappointed in Phoenix Park visitor centre.

Ashtown Visitor Centre and Castle is a fantastic attraction in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Great parkland area which includes the visitor centre, museum, castle, restaurant, picnic areas, walled garden and huge well equipped children’s playground.
It’s is popular with Dubliners and tourists alike. The indoor dining and access to the castle is not available during current restrictions.
