Thursday 4th August and we entered the amazing grounds of Trinity College through the large arched entrance off College Green.

As we emerged from the entrance one of the most eye catching sights that greeted us was this wonderful tower.

It stands 30.5 metres ( just over 100 feet) high and comprises of three sections. The largest of which is the square base, each side has a tall archway which enables pedestrians to walk under the Tower from each side. On the roof of the arches there is a statute on each of the four corners.

This supports, the second section, a round pillar with a number of oblong widow slots, with arched tops, flanked by pillars. The slots are filled with metal latticework.

The third section is the domed belfry with a cross on top.

The construction of the Tower was completed in 1853.

It is worth visiting the College if only to see this lovely structure.

Such a beautiful structure and location that I popped the question under the campanile in the evening when we had the whole area to ourselves... and she said yes!

Will forever hold a special place for us both.

On entering Trinity College throught the great wooden door off College Green one of the first thing to be seen is the Campanile  (bell tower) directly in front. It is situated in Parliament Square in the spectacular grounds of Trinity.

The bell tower stands nearly 100 foot tall  and the belfry is a cylindrical chamber with  Corinthian columns  around it There are  4 figures at its base which represent divinity, science, medicine and law. It was built in granite and completed 1853.

It is an iconic building in Trinity, it has history and superstition attached to it and it well worth a visit

There is a superstition about the tower which is that students who pass beneath it when the bells toll will fail their exams.

Hits you as you enter. Symmetrical buildings either side and ahead. Lawns. Magnificent magnolia tree. And bang in the centre this small perfect bell tower

The Campanile is what hits you as you enter Trinity College from College Green. It’s perfectly formed and settles in well amongst the other buildings on the quadrangle.

You cannot miss this iconic structure as you enter Trinity College. It is situated right in the centre of the grounds of the college. It is an interesting granite structure that carries its own traditions and superstitions. The student guide gave an informative explanation of the detailing of the bell tower. Good photo op.

You can’t miss the campanile, it’s a focal point of the campus and provides a beautiful backdrop for an already beautiful campus.
