While you will discover a lovely landmark of norman history, you will be appauled by local council's decision to allow modern offices within close range. With the river so close, you can begin to imagine the strategic planning of this military plot. However, all imagination is quickly quelmed by the completely out of place modern office block in front -... More

It was originally and earth and timber fort that because of its location could have a view of the river traffic on the Barrow. What remains of it was built in the early 13th century but suffered degradation over the centuries due to a lack of historical interest. A little garden provides shadow and a relaxing feeling. Full details can... More

We were wandering around Carlow town and saw this in the distance so decided to have a look. You don't pay anything to look around it which is great. I took a few pictures but they really don't do it justice. Although there isn't much left of the castle and they have had to close off areas due to vandalism... More

There is not much remaining of the Castle, but you can still have a walk around the ruins and there is a bit of a view of the Barrow! If your in the area, its worth while have a look.

The two towers and connecting wall is all that is left of the once majestic 13th century castle. There is some very informative stainless steel etchings that shows you what the castle looked like, originally. A lot has been done to beautify the ruins and to preserve it.

Well we drove through Carlow as we needed fuel. I convinced my boyfriend to drive past this landmark as I felt we hadnt seen enough historical places. He definetly said this made our trip complete....yes he was being ironic :) yes there isnt much left of it but hey it dates back to the 13 th century.

Carlow Castle is a nice landmark. I can't really say anything else about it. There is a lot of history attached but you might be better off visiting Carlow County Museum to discover this history! It is a real pity that the three missing walls are no longer in existance.
