    Great nature walk
The island of the sheep, great nature walk (10 miles for the loop so be prepared), lots of sheep’s, some cows and nice rhea house , a castle ruïne and a monument. On a good day, it s a very entertaining walk. Easy to reach from Oban by ferry, but count at least 5 to 6 hours to enjoy at the most.

    Beware the ferry ticket!
We love going over to Kerrera and the round walk is beautiful but you can now only pay by Smartphone if you get oi the ferry point, or at the Calmac office in Oban. So much simpler when you just paid the ferryman in cash. If you get there and dont have a Smartphone, tough. Not impressed with that at all

    Lovely hike; tricky logistics
Delightful views at every turn, with Gylen Castle being the highlight. It’s often rainy, so side paths can be muddy. The tea house serves better pastry than tea, but is fun. Two farm stops with fun goods charges by way of honesty boxes. All around, a lovely experience. Cars are not allowed on the island, and parking is tight on the Gallanach side. Ferry details: the Gallanach-Kerrera ferry runs every 30 min and gets you to the trailhead. Must pay online beforehand. They run as many times as needed to get everyone across. Note: there are no buses from Oban to Gallanach. It’s a £8ish taxi ride in 2024 or 2ish mile walk each way. You can start at the Gallanach ferry point then hike to the North marina and get a water taxi to Oban (or vice versa). Just a couple more miles enjoying the island. But the water taxis can sellout (reserve ahead of time) and don’t run frequently. Hope that helps! Bikes are welcome and a great option. Bike rental on the island is unreliable.

Son and I with our Westie got a weather window on Saturday between the 2 named storms. 1235 ferry over headed up hill past old schoolhouse currently funding to convert into community centre (please leave donation on island community just giving page). Passed Pigs, goats, highland cows, hens and sheep keeping our westies interest. Track then becomes grassier and drops down to bay on the other side of the island with views over to snowy Mull. Passed boatyard and final muddy section of path to our lunch spot at the Hutcheson monument overlooking Oban. We returned to ferry by newly created ''highway'' to complete 9km circuit with 190m of ascent in leisurely 3hrs. Needed 3 trips to return all 24+ passengers on 3.30pm ferry, as only takes 12 at a time. Great day out and will need to return to explore the souther half with castle, tea room and gardens.

The ferry to Kerrera is some 10 minute’s drive south out of Oban, parking is limited so ensure you arrive early. You have to pay to use the ferry and only cards are accepted. The ferry will run until all those waiting have been transferred. On disembarking we walked anti clockwise around the island, it did rain on a couple of occasions but on the whole, it was dry and on occasions the sun came out!! The walk is about 6 or 7 miles, on a variety of road farm track and muddy paths, with a steepish rise at one point, so wear good quality walking boots. Just over halfway round we stopped for our packed lunch at a beautiful spot overlooking the mainland. On our way back to the ferry we did a short diversion to Gylen Castle which is definitely worth a visit.

The Isle of Kerrera is an excellent place to visit for walking and brilliant views. Looking out onto the isles or back onto the mainland is breath taking at many points along the island. The castle on the southern end of the island is small but worth a look especially as it sits atop an excellent viewpoint.

Our party took a walk to the castle and back to the ferry so this is the only area of the Isle of Kerrera I have seen. There is a small farm shop selling eggs, lamb/mutton, homemade ice cream and cakes amongst other items paid for either through cash in an honesty box or through bank transfer using the info provided. The ice cream was very nice. The walk up to the shop was arounf 15 minutes from the ferry and there and back to the castle and a stop at the farm shop took us around 2.5 hours. The bunkhouse/tea room was on reduced hours and therefore closed due to covid during our visit

Just ensure you don't miss the ferry off the island or you might have to stay the night.

Spent a fantastic 5 hours walking around the South of the island. Off the ferry, up the hill towards the old school then follow the tracks. Fantastic views, wild, unspoiled. The walk was stiff going for us ( elderly) but it was beautiful. Tea room was closed as it was November but we hit it lucky with fantastic clear cold weather. If you like silence, scenery and space it's a place to go.

Took the small Cal Mac ferry over from the quay point on coast south of Oban, which took us over to the Island of Kerrera. Captain so very friendly and interesting to talk to. The weather was against us but we still went even though it was pouring of rain. If we'd stayed in Oban we still would have got soaked. So went a walk with a good heart on the island. Walked south to Horseshoe Bay and the ruins of Gylen Castle, unfortunately the tea garden was not open, out of season. The next day we took the water taxi over to the north of Kerrera Island, where the yachts are and walked up to Hutchesons Monument but the tea shop there was also closed as out of season. Still enjoyed both trips though to Kerrera.

Have now visited Kerrera at least 4 times and have always enjoyed the very 'out of the way' feel you encounter in an island which is both very close to the mainland and yet is a world of its own. The ferry run by Calmac runs on a fairly frequent timetable, even during winter and the main path around the generally southern part of the island is an interesting, if sometimes slightly challenging, encounter. The views are often spectacular and the diversity of terrain from the fairly hilly upland to coastal. At this time of year the 'tea garden' was understandably closed. Recommended.

We visited on a lovely day. The passenger only ferry takes you over from Oban in about 5 minutes. We took our dogs (must remain on lead at all times) and they enjoyed the walk as much as we did. We got off the ferry and walked 2.5 miles to the tea garden where we got a delicious bagel and coffee and then visited kerera castle before the 2.5 mile walk back. A great day trip 👍

Great island to visit and walk around, only had a short time on the island will go back and explore at a future date.

Ferry is for passengers and bikes only.

Great little farm shop that sold ice cream and snacks and local produce.

Must see if you would like someplace to see that is not reliant on cars for transport.
