The title of this review comes from two sources: The song by Runrig, which mentions St. Kilda in the last verse; and Michael Powell's excellent 1937 film, which was actually filmed on Foula in the Shetlands, but was supposedly about St. Kilda (or Hirta, to be precise). Apparently Powell had wanted to film on Hirta, but was unable to obtain... More

We landed at the village bay on our first attempt to get there and from stepping ashore to leaving after about five hours we were enchanted by this truly magical place. The warden welcomed us and we were free to go about the main island at our leisure. The peace and mystery you feel as you wander round was such... More

We planned to go to St Kilda a few months before actually going. The St. Kilda archipelago is comprised of four volcanic islands: Hirta, Dun, Soay and Boreray and we planned to visit the only one that you are permitted to, Hirta. We had arranged to holiday on a small island in Badachro, near Gairloch, taking our rib boat with... More

St Kilda was a place I'd long wanted to visit. I'd read many books about the archipelago and we'd already had one holiday on the Isle of Harris in an effort to make the trip. It's hard to get to because sea conditions often mean that the journey can't be made. This time we were lucky and managed to get... More

You can walk inside the structures and see how these people lived...a community, everyone shared everything. It is a wonderful archeological site. Wonderful views from the top of the mountain. It is gentle sloping.

We were lucky enough to be on a small cruise ship and St Kilda was on our itinerary. Even so, this was not an easy place to get to and the zodiac boat trip off the ship to the jetty was interesting and it was uncertain if we could moor due to the weather. We did make it, sadly the... More

We had the good fortune to book with Angus Campbell of Kilda Cruises - just excellent service from Angus and Malcom. He kept us informed of the weather window and we were lucky in that one of the two days cleared sufficiently for us to be able to travel. 2.5 hours out and the boat trip was just great -... More

Standing on the edge of the almost 400 m high cliffs, surrounded by hundreds of birds and seeing nothing else than the nearby small stacks and isles of the group creates a feeling of being "alone" in the middle of the ocean. We were lucky to be on Hirta on a sunny warm and calm summer day with not too... More

Tim Vine won the Edinburgh Festival best joke award in 2010 with "I've just been on a holiday of a lifetime. Tell you what, never again!" The opportunity to gotostkilda with Derek and NIcola on a very comfortable vessel, was presented to me as a birthday present by generous friends and I have now been on what many see as... More
