Nalanda Gedige is an ancient archaeological site located in Sri Lanka, near the town of Matale, in the central part of the island. It is believed to be a Hindu temple complex, and it is renowned for its unique architectural style, which is a fusion of South Indian Dravidian and traditional Sinhalese designs.

The term "Gedige" refers to a building or structure, and Nalanda Gedige is often described as a temple or shrine that dates back to the 8th to 10th centuries. Its origins and purpose are still subjects of debate among historians and archaeologists, but it is thought to have served religious or ceremonial functions, possibly dedicated to Hindu deities or used for Buddhist rituals.

The temple's design is notable for its intricate stone carvings, including depictions of gods, animals, and mythical creatures, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. The site has been partially restored and is a popular tourist attraction, offering insights into Sri Lanka's rich cultural and religious heritage.

This is a Hindu Temple built between 8th and 11th century with intriguing carvings and details of Hinduism influence from South Indian architecture in relation to tantric learnings. Free entry to this archeological site. Interesting place to stop over shortly for 15-20 mins after visiting Dambulla Golden Cave Temple before heading to Kandy.

From the monent you leave your vehicle in the carpark, you know you ate someplace special. You walk down a tree lined path to the gedige or stone temple. The temple itself is a blend of Hindu and Buddhist architecture with impsh dwarves, copulating couples, elephants and Buddhas. Inside is a Buddha image found only in Sri Lanka. Lovely break from the busy dites in the Cultural Triangle.

The Nalanda Gedige is an ancient temple with a Hindu Kovil. This was earlier situated in the middle of the reservoir, but when the expansion of the reservoir, this was relocated as it was earlier days. Shape and stones everything kept as they were.
This place is believed to be the center of Sri Lanka.

I’m not sure why not more people stop here because it’s well worth the visit. Perhaps because it’s free, people don’t think it’s worthwhile. However, it’s beautiful complete stone temple, which used to mark the centre of Sri Lanka. It has Buddhist and Hindu elements, making it unique. Use one of the guides and remember to tip him, he will take whatever you give him so 500-600 SLD was very much appreciated in 2019.

Though it wasn't on our itinerary, our tour guide suggested we stop at this hidden gem and we're so glad he did! He said it was the exact center of the country, and his GPS app on his iPhone proved him right. It's a stone temple built at least 1200 years ago, and was used by both Hindus and Buddhists in the past. Though it's an archaeological wonder, it seems to be off the beaten path - or it was when we visited. It was a nice change from the other, heavily-trafficked tourist destinations.
