The drive to Eilean Donan is stunning and the Castle is beautiful as it comes into view in its surroundings
Stunning location and the drive to this is beautiful. Castle is stunning sat prominently on the island and can imagine the night time pictures don’t do it justice. Interesting story behind the castle and family who have this castle, as you walk around you get a glimpse into the history and the family. Well worth visiting if you’re travelling around the Highlands!

    Quick, but Beautiful Stop
Not much to see here but a beautiful castle in the middle of the Loch! A perfect look back into Scotland's crazy history! We stopped around 6pm as it was getting dark and the entire castle was lit up from the outside, so it looked even more magical! If it's on your way, definitely stop here!

    One of our favourite castles
Incredibly beautiful location (the drive there was magnificent!) and a very interesting attraction to visit. The castle is well-known for being a film location for films such as Highlander, which is why my husband wanted to visit. It didn't disappoint! No photos are allowed inside the castle, but you can get some fantastic photos of the exterior. There are very knowledgeable employees stationed throughout the castle who will answer any questions you might have. The castle does have stairs you must climb, but they're not bad, unless you have mobility problems. In the visitor's centre, there's a nice cafe, a food hall, and a gift shop. There's also a quick "walk-up" cafe just outside the centre, near the car park.

    Stunning!
We only used Eilean Donan Castle as a pitstop between Ft. William and Portree. We needed to stretch our legs and the glassy waters around it were just stunning, reflecting puffy white clouds of the sky. The castle was just opening for the day, so the crowds weren't there. Gorgeous location!

    Amazing castle in magical location
We visited on a rainy day and had a wonderful time. The castle is so well presented and the information available really helps to get a feel for the place. We can highly recommend a visit to Eilean Donan castle.

    Beautiful location, very photogenic
A spectacular location, well worth a visit. The castle grounds and the building are relatively small so its best to try and avoid busy times as the rooms can get quite full of people. There is some history and background, public rooms, bedrooms and kitchens on display. For a smaller fee you can roam the gardens and bridge without going in. Its also an easy walk from the small township of Dornie where there’s a couple of pubs for before or after visit refreshment although there is a cafe and shop at the castle. Last entrance in through the castle doors is 5pm.

Magical - don’t miss this one!
My 11 year old daughter was growing weary of castles after four days of touring. One of the staff members here, Richard, noticed and gave her an activity book, explained all about clan names and crests, showed her some of the castle secrets, and told us all special places to visit in the area. The place itself is fascinating and absolutely gorgeous, but Richard made it pure magic. Lots of parking and nice visitors center.

    Eilean Donan Castle
Lovely place to visit filled with lots of history. You can’t take photos inside the castle which is a shame because there is too much to read through. It was very busy, especially the car park. There was shops and places to get food which we didn’t realise until we got there. You can park for up to 3 hours in the car park.

Beautiful small castle by the lake
The location is beautiful. A pretty large parking - for a fee - and leave your backpacks in your car or lockers. The castle is very well preserved and the visit insightful. If you have time for a guided visit and interested in a comprehensive manner there is availability. Because you are in Scotland you may enter on rain and exit on sunshine.

Even on a wet day it is magical
This castle has everything. Beautiful location, old exterior and a modern, well 1920's, interior. The guides are very knowledgeable regarding all aspects of the history of the castle and are approachable, with a good scene of humour. I liked the scullery with the maid juggling the washing up. There is a cafe, which has incredibly long queues at times but the food is good. They need more loos, especially when the coach parties arrive. The gift shops better than most with a good selection of items on sale. This is my favourite Scottish Castle.

I was here on Saturday 3rd Feb 24 with my 20 year old son and his gf. Being a McKinney, we have derived from MacKenzie (owners of the castle), so we were all looking forward to this tour. We were met by a very interesting and knowledgeable tour guide named Richard. He was so engaging and passionate about the history of the castle and made the whole experience so much more fascinating. He made this the best part of our trip. I really think his boss needs to seriously consider giving him a raise as he deserves it 100%. The youngsters adored his story telling skills and said it was the best experience they had during our visit to Western Scotland. We will be recommending this experience to everyone, everyone needs to meet Richard😁

It was reasonably priced at £12. We had no wait, there was sufficient parking and fabulous views. There is a great gift shop on site and a cafe, although I didn't use the cafe.

Highly recommended

Eilean Donan never disappoints. Our family has been 3 times and the experience is always magical. If we are in the area we feel we must stop by for a short visit. The town is very quaint and quiet. Finding a place to eat in October was challenging.

This is one of,the most scenic looking castles we saw in Scotland. The castle was rebuilt mostly in the early 19th century. We were on our way to the isle of Skye so this was a stop. If I had a redo, I would have paid for parking and explored the outside of the castle and skipped paying to go inside and being pushed along through the castle. The first stop inside the castle provides a general overview of the castle history. Most of the inside did not make an impression on me and since you can not take pictures I have no memories of anything interesting that stood out during my tour of the inside.

Disgusted by the lacklustre unhelpful staff.
I arrived at 3pm only to find everything was shut except the gift shop. When I politely asked why they were shut so early I was told by the lady serving in the gift shot “ BECAUSE” when ( after a lengthy pause for more “ I asked again I was told coz it’s winter.

How this is allowed is beyond me. Extremely embarrassing. Running this castle on a whim of whether they can be bothered. They have the work and duty ethic of a fake market stall with a suitcase and a look out.

I was told by some disgruntled notes tour guides who were having to apologise to their passengers that this is the norm forEilean donan.

So sorry us tourists bothered you today at 3pm.

Visited in 2016 and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Learned history of the area and original castle.

However return trip this year (2023) was bleak. No conducted tour, no history, just a walk through.

Did two other castle tours in Scotland which were much better, Glamis where a guide shows you through the castle and explains the significance of each room, plus ghost stories and Dunvegan which doesn't provide a guide, but has written material along the way to help provide information on what you are seeing.

I wouldn't pay to go through again.

The location of this castle is spectacular. Parking is limited, so try to plan for less busy times. The audio guides were handy, but would be nice if they offered a guided tour with even more information. The cafe was OK but works if you are short on time. Very nice gift shop.

We were returning to Glencoe on our way back from Skye & never been past Eilean Donan before but heard a lot about it. The weather was pretty awful but it added an atmosphere to the place. There was not an awful lot to see but what was there was very interesting. Although it was built in the 13th century it had been mostly destroyed . It was sympathetically renovated in the early 20th century & good job was done.
