Not much of the Fort remains but there are some cannons. Good information board showing what it used to look like and explaining the history. Go through the arch and follow the path round to the benches for a quiet spot to sit and enjoy views over Loch Linnhe.

While it is true that there isn't a great deal to see in material terms, simply strolling around this ancient space is an atmospheric and thought-provoking experience.
The base of some original walling remains, and this alone should be sufficient to inspire a little contemplation.
Its central location means it is easy enough to find, and spend a few moments here, if you wish.

Having read all the Outlander books, this was a must-see for me, even though there really isn't much left of the Old Fort. Close to the train station, a quick visit here is time well spent.

Generally, I love visiting historical ruins, but there is so little left of the original fort that a visit here is over in 5 minutes! If you're passing by it is worth stopping to read the information boards, but if you made a special trip from further afield you'd probably be disappointed.

This site is the reason there is a town called Fort William--it is the remains of a garrison from the late 17th century. The Gaelic name for Fort William is An Gearasdan, which means "the garrison." It is located near the River Lochy, across the road form Morrison's (which is right by the train station). There are lots of very informative signs for reading, and there are some old walls to look at and some old gates to walk through. If you are looking at the fort from the road/town side, it can be easy to miss because it looks a lot like a grassy mound. The highest walls are on the river-side of the mound. You can sit on the western wall and imagine what it would have been like to defend this place when you saw ships sailing up the river.
Teen's Opinion: Nice place to walk around in if you have free time, especially if you are interested in the history of the town.

We visited Fort William in desperate need of nature and rented a caravan with the kids. We had a fantastic time out there. Kids happy, adults happy 😁

The site of the original Fort William where the current town gets its name. Built to keep the Highlands in check and named after William Prince of Orange.
It is a grassed area with some wall remains and several information panels explaining the history of fort and town.
Just up from the A 82 and across the road from Morrisons, there were a lot of people eating their food and sunbathing when we visited.
More importantly it is also the start or finish of the Great Glen Way walk.

This is not a castle as such - it is a'small fort'much of which is destoryed.
If you want to see a better castle in Fort William as jed103 has said the Old Inverlochy Castle at PH33 6TF
It is a 6 minute drive from Morrisons up Belford then the North Road then left.
