Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

Lucky for us, we were in the company of Craig Fraser, one of the best Rangers to guide you in and around Loch an Eilein. The Loch is just wonderful and it was a pity that we could only enjoy it for a couple of hours. A place created to enjoy peace and nature at the same time. We strongly... More

This is a beautiful walk just a short distance from Aviemore. It's also a romantic walk. As you stroll through the Caledonian Pine Forest surrounding the Loch the castle ruins on the island add to the historic and romantic feel to the place. It takes about an hour to walk around the loch and its well worth the small effort.

This beautiful loch is well worth walking up to from Aviemore - you can of course drive but you will miss out on some of the lovely woodland along the way. It's about 3 miles each way and about 3 miles around the loch itself. We did the walk up and down together, and then I rode there and around... More

Take the family for a walk around this spectacular wee loch, it'll take an Hour or so and a million miles from life in the city. Fresh air, lapping water, wildlife, then grab some refreshments in the historic bothy shop. I think its a Pound or so for parking, no big deal, well worth a visit.

We walk this with our young girls every year! The path that circles the Loch is in fantastic condition, nothing laborious with very gradual inclines that gently follow the Loch's outline. Plenty of places to stop for eating or taking in the scenery! Our young girls 5,7 and 8 find this walk fantastic and often talk about it back home.... More

Good paths for walking on with opportunities to get down to the loch if you fancy. Lovely shop on site with lots of artwork, snacks and a cuppa if you want one.

On arrival we had a opportunity to watch some of the resident red squirrels feeding. This is a lovely spot to spend the day and take a picnic - would recommend.
