Walked it over seven days: a relatively leisurely pace. Highlight was Day 7 Fort Augustus to Invermorriston via the High Road. Shortish day which allowed time to enjoy the towns in one or both ends. Stunning views for most of the day's walk. If you want only a piece of the trail, this is the section to do. Days 1-6, Ft. William to Fort Augustus, are pleasant. Much of it along canal trails. Not strenuous, but the distances can be challenging because of the harder surfaces you walk on. Anticipated Day 8 to be the hardest due to climbs and distance, but soft trails actually made it quite pleasant. Spent an extra day in Inverness at the end and really enjoyed it.

We were staying in Fort Augustus for the week and it was great to be able to do parts of the Great Glen Way without taking the car out. For example :
One day we got the bus to Laggan Locks and walked back - the journey taking us partly along an old railway line and then along the canal side. The bus driver was very helpful in making sure we got off at the right place.
Another day we got the bus to Invermoriston and took the high route back to Fort Augustus. It's a steep climb, but easy underfoot and it was worth it for the amazing views. After the initial climb there is a very convenient bench built into a big rock and further along there is a lovely stone shelter which made a comfortable lunch stop. The descent down to Fort Augustus through the woods was gorgeous.
We found the paths to be very clear and well maintained.
Certainly made us think about coming back to do the full GGW.

We love going walks so we started at the Inverness Castle and just walked up til we were knackered and walked back.

It is such a great picturesque walk with bridges, benches and a cool breeze from the river and the trees.

If you are doing this on a sunny day it adds to the walk. Well worth the effort.

Outstanding extremely friendly and welcoming service, after a long day hiking one of our group realised they had lost their phone over a mile back down the trail.

On hearing this one of the staff kindly offered to drive us back to search for it. A greatly appreciated gesture, especially given how sore we were from +20miles that day.

Large, clean rooms, and shared bathroom.

Well stocked pantry with dry foods/plasters etc. for sale and good cooking facilities. Both of which were extremely handy as no other premises were open (and we would have suffered to walk any further that day).

We were in Invergordon for one day on a cruise ship and our taxi driver stops at the Great Glen Way viewpoint for pictures - wow! Absolutely stunning scenery from all angles! Highly recommended to do a few minutes stop here!

We planned our hike along the Great Glen Way for 7 days between 14 - 20 September 2019. We have done many long walks so we planned this ourselves and booked all our accommodation direct. We decided to carry what we needed and our packs were about 14 lbs or 6 kg. We did use an anti midge wristband (Jungle Formula SLAP IT about £10) which may have been a great success as we saw no midges at all - while others complained about them. The first day from Fort William was very wet and despite good waterproofs, we were soaked. After that, there was no serious rain. The first and second day pretty much follow the great Caledonian canal so that was flat towpath walking and rather dull. Day 3 to Fort Augustus was away from the canal but followed a disused rail track so that was flat and uninteresting walking through woods. After that, we took the high-level options and really enjoyed getting into the hills. The last 4 days were in the wilds but on good tracks - we hardly had mud on our boots. Yes, you could do the hike in trainers or shoes but we word light hiking boots and that seemed the best choice for us. Unusually we decided to break the last day from Drumnadrochit to Inverness into two stages by staying at Camping Pod Heaven in Abriachan. That was a success and we recommend it if you have time. To keep our packs light we did not carry water but used a KATADYN BeFree bottle and filter - this allows you to fill from a stream and drink it straight away from the bottle (though a clever filter!). We did use walking poles - not essential but we find them well worth taking. This was an easy route for us but the scenery was good and we very much enjoyed the hike. The B&Bs we used were between £75 and £85 and our evening meals usually cost about £30-40 with drinks.

This was my first long walk. We took a full seven days, and it was definitely the right way to do it for a beginner. If you are an experienced hiker, I recommend leaving the hiking boots at home. Most of the trail is along well maintained or even paved paths. If you have the option, take the high routes. The views are spectacular!
