- Tina T9 contributionsJanuary necropolis tourExcellent guided tour by Annette and another colleague, the tour was informative and funny teaching the history of the necropolis and Glasgow in a fascinating way. To think these people are volunteers is amazing but you can tell they really enjoy imparting their knowledge to others. Keep up the hard work. If you enjoy history this is a definite must but just wear sensible shoes as it can get a little uneven underfoot.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 January 2023
- Sam3314Derby, United Kingdom2,054 contributionsVictorian graveyard offering great viewsIt may seem odd to visit a graveyard but this ranks with Pere Lachaise and Highgate as somewhere to visit. Some really ornate tombs and memorials, a column to John Knox. There are also great views over the Presbyterian cathedral and the city and surrounding countryside. Accessible from the sightseeing bus, other buses or a half hour walk from the cityVisited March 2023Written 1 March 2023
- suebell262Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom246 contributionsLoved !xLoved this Glasgow Necropolis (reminded me of Paris) took the hop on and off bus on a very wild windy day on way to Tennents Brewery tour and wasn't disappointed - such magnificence on a hill ! Would deffo recommend and hope to return on a calmer warmer day ! xVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2023
- StotheNStockholm, Sweden547 contributionsVery imposing and grand..quite unbecoming for a cemetery really!I visited this place as part of a walking city tour. this is right behind the cathedral and the Tennet beer brewery is nearby. There are a lot of interesting headstones to see and some very sombre epitaphs to read. I recommend spending about an hour walking here as many locals sems to use this place to jog/run.Visited March 2023Written 24 April 2023
- Matthew YKinston, North Carolina9 contributionsGuided tour of the Necropolis with ClaireI contacted the Necropolis non-profit to try and arrange a tour for my wife and I when we visited Edinburgh. I'm so glad that I did! Our guide, Claire, was outstanding. She knew all about the place, told us some amazing stories, and was our guide for almost an hour and a half walk through the city of the dead. We took several photos, but I won't upload them here since they won't do the place justice. When you reach the top of the Necropolis, you'll have a commanding view of the East End of Glasgow. Well worth it! It was one of the best tours we had on our vacation to Scotland, and I would highly recommend it to anyone!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2023
- sallycigim2018Boulder, Colorado7 contributionsNot to Be MissedAtmospheric, inspiring, intriguing site! I was shocked that the guidebooks I consulted didn't highlight the Necropolis more. Absolutely fascinating, with beautiful views. Don't miss the "Jewish enclosure" and beautiful little monument to William Wallace.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2023
- GlasgowWriterGlasgow, United Kingdom102 contributionsTook some distant relatives for a walk around hereMy Australian cousins were over for a visit and wanted to see Glasgow. They were blown away by the Necropolis. Having walked past and through it so many times you tend to forget how amazing it is until you see someone experience it for the first time.Visited June 2023Written 30 June 2023
- MerrowmumGuildford, United Kingdom1,279 contributionsFascinatingYes it’s “just” a cemetery when it comes down to it, but what a cemetery! Effectively a monument to the merchant class’ self-aggrandisement in the 19th century, it is a fascinating place to wander around and look at the variety of monuments of many shapes and sizes. There are also excellent views over the city. Don’t forget the very small Jewish section as well as the Wallace memorial. Our highlight, though, was seeing the tomb of the writer of the nursery rhyme “Wee Willy Winkie”!Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 July 2023
- RiShaLondon, United Kingdom466 contributionsAmazing!Came here recently during my visit to Glasgow. It's situated right next to the cathedral, so easy to combine as one visit. It's a really impressive place, with lots of monuments on display. Well worth the walk from the city centre!Visited July 2023Written 20 July 2023
- Jay BFairhope, Alabama1,023 contributionsHistory in TombstonesThis place is amazing, unlike anything I've seen before. The massive "necropolis" sits high atop a hill, adjacent to the also massive Glasgow Cathedral. Glasgow's history is on display here, told through the thousands of graves, tombstones, mausoleums, and other monuments. It's actually a beautifully landscaped space, and quite peaceful to walk through.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2023

I was brought up just across from The Necropolis, in the Toonheid in St Mungo St, I have walked all over Glasgow, been to all attractions and famous sites, But I have NEVER ever been in The Necropolis !
This sounds silly, but I have tried hundreds of times over the years
(I am 70 now)
But I get to end of bridge, and I cannot step off it into cemetery,
It's like an invisible wall,
I remember even trying to go in with my kids during summer hols, lovely hot sunny day just couldn't, don't expect to go in now, not even in a box

The Necropolis is right next to Mungo's Cathedral. Nice to walk around this green area. Nothing much to see, other than the toumb stones, and some of them quite fancy.

We ended up missing the tour for another activity we chose. It probably would have been nice to know more information about the area, but we also didn't feel too much like our experience was lacking to be able to just explore around! We spent about an hour beginning to end, but I would imagine one could spend hours exploring everything! We had intended to return, but didn't end up with enough time before traveling to another city

This is a very interesting place to visit, because of the 'beautiful' gravestones and the best view of the Glasgow cathedral. Stroll here for half an hour, and enjoy the scenery.

Although this place is not in the center of town (just east of it), a visit to the Glasgow Necropolis is highly recommended.
It is interesting in itself to walk through a (mainly) 19th century cemetery, but the elevated location makes this place really special: views in all directions.
A photographer's paradise!

When my partner first suggested going I wasn't convinced but it really is an incredible place. We spent a peaceful morning walking around and reading all the graves and tombstones. The monuments are just wow and loved the vast view of the city from the top of the hill!

I love to visit cemeteries and had I been alone would have spent much more time wandering around reading the gravestones or taken a tour. Unfortunately my family doesn’t quite share my enthusiasm so our time was limited. What a great place, with lovely views and interesting history. The website said it closed at 4:30 but we arrived after 5 and the gate was open with lots of people inside so maybe confirm times before you go.

We had to visit The Necropolis whilst on a day trip to Glasgow. It was easy for us to walk from George Square and around The Necropolis but it would not be suitable for anyone with mobility problems. It is hilly!

Annette is the official tour guide. She took us around at 1pm. We had a brilliant time. Annette is very knowledgeable, patient and loves a chat. We recommend Annette, her official touring company (affiliated with Board of the Necropolis) absolutely.
The history buffs (doctors) amongst us loved hearing about the links to medicine, nursing and the Royal Infirmary. But if you want to know a lot more about Glasgow's past, this is a great place to start.
The Jewish section has just been revitalised and fallen headstones stood up again.

Hello,
How long would it take to walk up the hill? Thanks!
LordC16
Glasgow, UK15 contributions
It can be as quick as 20 minutes if you like, or easily as long as 1hr if you prefer to meander through the graves and read some of the stones along the way. Either is rewarding!

The website says that this closes at 4:30, but in here it says 7:00. Could someone please advise me which is correct.

This question is 10 months old, so I don't know if you still need an answer. I just got back from seeing this and found that the Cathedral closed at 4:30, but the Necropolis was open until past 6pm.
