On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the town's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews - the focal point of the Church in medieval Scotland. Today explore the underground 16th century siege mine and countermine and the bottle dungeon. There is a visitor centre with exhibition.

This is a medieval beauty. The weather changes so suddenly in here. The view is amazing. A MUST to see this castle in Scotland!

We went here as part of the cathedral/castle package. Well worth seeing both. The castle begins with an informative and historic museum/walkthrough, followed by entering the castle grounds itself. Plenty of photo opportunities and great surrounding sights with the cathedral in the distance and beachfront nearby. Highlight of the castle is the countermine (won't spoil it). Staff are friendly enough... More

The weather was sunny but cold on the April day that we visited. We had to hurry through but it was quite interesting to see the history of the castle, the inhabitants and then the various antagonists that have fought for the castle. The location on the cliffs above the see and the sight of the nearby cathedral are magnificent.... More

The castle was really good but the overflowing litter bins outside the entrance almost put us off. I know the council should empty them but if they don't do it on a Sunday, whats stopping the castle staff from keeping the entrance clean and tidy? Is that beneath them or is it a case of its not my job?

Loved the exhibition and great views from around the castle. Visited on a sunny, mild day so nice to sit and relax on benches. Climbed down the mine but this was a little disappointing.

This is a small, picturesque ruin, with absolutely excellent staff. What is left of this seaside bishop's castle can be covered quite quickly, though it is worth a visit, especially so for the mine and countermine. It is an idea to buy tickets for the castle and cathedral at the same time.

The castle is a picturesque place, but there really isn't much left to see. It truly is a ruin. The exhibit (in the building where you purchase your ticket and enter the castle) gives a nice history of the place so you have some context. We enjoyed our visit.

We went into the castle & were welcomed by two lovely ladies. We used our English Heritage cards & thoroughly enjoyed our visit both the exhibition which shows some of the castles history. The castle is well presented so you can imagine what it used to look like.

This is a castle in ruins right on the North Sea in beautiful St. Andrews. The scenery is very nice. The bonus is St Andrews Cathedral that is a short walk along the shore of the north Sea.
