This medieval wall and city gate was built in 1587, and was the work of Thomas Robertson. It’s main purpose was to be a proudly grand and intimidating entrance to the city, rather than a defensive gate. It sadly fell into disrepair, and was fully restored in 1843, by John Grant, who also contributed a city coat-of-arms plaque ( amongst other additions.) It’s the best-preserved existing city gate within Scotland.

This monumental gate is one of the old late medieval entrances into the city. The size of the gate is its most prominent feature. Other interesting architectural features are the water drains that look like miniature cannons, the small cannon holes of the turrets and the polygonal towers flanking the single arched entrance. A landmark worth a detour if in St. Andrews.

This area feels very separate to the rest of the town - and all the better for it to escape tourists etc. Very pleasant.

There are a couple of confusing reviews on here re the West Port. One suggests that it is a fine eatery - it is not. It is an old gateway - not a restaurant. Another reviewer can’t understand why it is called the West Port, so for others who might not know the terms, it simply means that it was the gate at the west end of the town.

The gate itself has been largely rebuilt, so most of it isn’t original. It is however in the correct spot and is well worth seeing. Someone else commented that it wasn’t a defensive gate and I can understand that because, to my eye, it seems a bit too small to have realistically fulfilled such purpose, and when we saw it my first thoughts were that the shape and style were like the archetypical toy version of a castle gate.
It’s really rather pretty.

As Saint Andrews is small, there is plenty of time to see all of the historic spots, including this stone wall. Worth a walk through or drive through.

It is a large medieval stone gate to the town. A great place for a photo. As St Andrew's is a small town it is something everyone visiting sees. Nothing more and nothing less. Being a history buff I loved it.

This is part of the historic wall of old St Andrew's at the west end of town. Cars drive through it, which makes it difficult to get a good photo, but definitely worth taking time to have a look and read the information boards.

Visited St Andrews and found the town a pleasant place to wander around for a while, plenty of places to eat and drink or tourist shopping for Scottish items and visit historic sites or the home of golf.
