My husband and his band mate were playing an acoustic gig here during the festival. I went along to cheer them on. The setting of this place is quite unique, basically it is a pop up venue. The woman on before my husband and the guy on after were really good as they had bands/singers on all day for about... More

Fun venue. Relaxed and lots of live music by some brilliant bands. The drinks are very expensive, £4 a shot etc etc. Lack of alcohol choice. Bouncers are over the top. Won't let you take your drink outside even if it's just to smoke. Not illegal to drink in the street. Ruined my evening when I was told off by... More

Sparse, distinctive and fun. Hay bales to sit on and WCs directly off the main space. I visited the Cowshed a few times, but in fact I wasn't a customer, I was performing with a vocal group there. The gigs were good: the audiences were modest but enthusiastic, the sound was clear and the atmosphere was unpressurised and relaxed. The... More

Comedy was excellent but the venue was dark, sticky and super expensive. Small can of punk IPA was £5!!!

So expensive for what it is. £4.50 pint of tenants in a plastic cup. Quirky layout good for live music. Toilets are in the main room with holes in the doors. Not pleasant.

Pop by here and get the feeling as if you have just entered a young farmers dance, or avoid it if that puts you off. The cowshed was pretty good, big screen for the football and a casual approach to having a drink ... nothing special really but still ok to pop by. £4 a pint so a little pricey... More

We stumbled into the Cowshed on our way home, and ended up staying until the musicians ended. The toilets were a bit dodgy, and I'm not sure I'll be converted to hay-bale seating any time soon... but the drinks were cheap and the live bands were awesome! It was a very unexpected way to end our night, but will definitely... More

Popped in at the end of the evening, music was great, enjoyed our drink and had a bash at hanging from the bar. The place was full, but still room to move about and made a change from other places to visit. £4 for a bash at hanging from the bar was a bit of a cheek

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
