The place is huge ! I always manage to get a table, though the place is always full and crowded. This is the cheapest bar I found near princess street and Rose steet. A varied selection on the tap, drinks are very moderately priced. Food is typical bar food but I like their chicken wraps.

I had been out for a curry with my wife & daughter. My two companions had found the curry a little on the spicy side and requested that we call in somewhere so that they could have a port & brandy each to settle their stomachs. (I did not want a drink.) We came across the aptly named Standing Order.... More

First visit here for a long time one Sunday lunch time. Opted for one of the meal deals - always the best value. I had a Southern chicken wrap with chips and my daughter a chicken burger sandwich. Food arrived incredibly quickly but was tasty, with a meal deal saving of about £6 for the two of us. Place was... More

Tried to go here for drinks, had been waiting about ten minutes to be served, while others who queued after me were served. Eventually was tended to by a young bar man who ID'd me (which I get, I'm 21). He then questioned who was in MY ID. When I showed him another form he told me to 'calm down'... More

Visited whilst shipping in Edinburgh. Had a quick drink and a relax. Great setting, the place is lovely decorated keeping some of the old features in. Great for a pit stop whilst in Edinburgh.

Went to the bar go watch the rugby n the big screen. Good atmosphere in there but it will get very busy during the games. Screen was up high so no problem viewing. Plenty of bar staff to serve the customers. The real ale beer was well kept and had lots on offer. Avoid if you don't like crowded pubs... More

We always visit The Standing Order when we go to Edinburgh its an old bank with many original features a fantastic ceiling and rose marble pillows with the safe still in place. The food&drinks are reasonable with decent service although food wise you get what you pay for. Well worth a look in you won't be disappointed the real downside... More

The standing order is situated on George Street, and can also be accessed by Rose Street. We knew of this pub from a previous visit. Huge place. Lots of little rooms off the main entrance. Very busy place. Good extensive menu. Very reasonable for food and drinks. Nicely decorated. Well worth a visit. Very popular with groups of people, and... More

Came for a few beers by myself while my girlfriend was getting ready and found the place really nice. Plus the art work is amazing.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
