The ghosts and ghouls tour by Mercat Tours is a 2-hour walking tour, mostly in the vaults/caverns under the south bridge. Very disappointing. The guide was too melodramatic and jokey - but mostly had nothing much to say. A few decent stories, some awful attempts to get the group to participate in r-enactments. Don't waste your time.

We did the daytime "Historic Underground" tour and our guide was Sue. The tour was very intersting and we learned a lot about both the above ground and under ground, history of Edinburgh. There are about 30 people max per tour which is about right. Everyone could hear what was being said and the tour didn't feel rushed. Good footwear... More

We met outside St Giles' Cathedral on the Royal Mile. Stephanie gave us a tour of the more gruesome bits of Edinburgh's history ending up in vaults under the city that few ever see. An interesting tour full of drama.

We booked the evening ghost tour, which was £16 including a drink. The tour lasted 2 hours in total, and included an outside tour and a tour of the underground. Our tour guide, Jared, did a great job of perfecting a creepy persona and maintained interest and audience involvement throughout. There are a number of underground tours on offer and... More

The underground vaults historical tour was fantastic! Definitely a must see. Even though we didn't opt for the ghost tour, this one had a creepy vibe just because if the location. It's very dark down there, lit by a few electric lights and candles. Wear flat shoes and watch your step! The ground is uneven but not hazardous. A very... More

Had a wonderful evening tour with Mercat Tours' Laura on the Doomed, Dead, and Buried tour. She provided an entertaining look at the history of Edinburgh, and a great tour of the Blair Street vaults. Moving from there to the Cannongate churchyard, she provided entertaining insight into the dark past of Edinburgh at locations along the way. The final set... More

We went on the Ghouls & Ghosts tour and our guide Linda was brilliant fun. Lots of historical facts to back up the grizzly ghostly tales & some spooky locations such as the underground vaults, topped off with a visit to Megget’s cellar for a whisky. Great fun, if you let your 'serious self' have a night off

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
