Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

A beautiful book store. And if you pay £7 pp you get to see the John Knox House Tour, a must for any history lover. The things you get to are are just incredible.

You are given a copy of a book and it explains each part of the tour.

Probably wouldn’t have visited if we hadn’t got the pass. We didn’t know who John Knox was beforehand so wasn’t desperate to visit. Cute little house but only stayed about 20 minutes.

Very educational and immersive to visit and learn about the Reformation in Scotland. We knew very little about John Knox before this. Nice staff in the reception area. Good change of pace from the busy Royal mile outside. All well worth your time.

Sadly there was little to do on the mile due to the passing of the Queen. Luckily this gem was open and quiet. Loved the displays.

The oldest tenement in town has been carefully restored and maintained by NTS.
The self guided tour takes you in and oot the house . The tragic trio of Knox, Mary Queen of Scots and one of the original owners James Mosman come back to haunt you, in the nicest possible way of course.
The interior is a magic medieval maze with painted wooden ceilings and oak room opulence.
The gallery of Biblical Bling contains a priceless collection ,all carefully under lock and key !

It's a very small and cozy house-museum that provides additional insight into Scotland's 16th century history. If you're a fan of Mary Queen of Scots, you will hear some details about her life too. This place is cheap and won't take too much of your time, yet feels very authentic, so I strongly recommend it to people interested in John Knox, Mary Queen of Scots, or reformation.

Away from the heavyweight attractions at the top of the Royal Mile this is a fascinating small museum

Fantastic period house and a good account of the life of one of the key names in Scottish National history

Visiting this iconic house halfway down Edinburgh's Royal Mile was a real eye-opener. It and its interesting but quite limited contents nonetheless shed light on what was one of THE pivotal periods in Scottish History seen at a unique spot in this beautiful city. The characters associated with the place are historically famous because of their places in society at the time and illuminate our records of their uncompromising approaches to life that still affect us all today.
So many different aspects of life are brought into the frame. And just down the street is the Edinburgh Museum which adds additional helpful information about the area.
