Really great tour and history lesson of the underground vaults. Our tour guide Shawn was great, really knowledgeable, funny and gave us some good scares! The tour starts above ground, you then head into the vaults gathering loads of great information and history of the city. Everyone in our party was really impressed with the tour and highly recommends it.... More

Went on the "Terror Tour," loved our guide Darren. He was a great storyteller and was a total professional. The history is unreal and the vaults are haunting. When we went in the stone circle vault a young guy stepped in and said he felt a pain in his back but he thought it was psychological, my friend made him... More

Our guide was Darren and he was great . Knowledgeable, humorous and able to add a sense of drama. All four of us, Mum, Dad, student daughter and her boyfriend all thoroughly enjoyed the tour. £44 well spent.

Me and my husband went on a ghost and terror tour on the 9th March 2017, our guides name was Hannah and she was amazing. We certainly had a great night. We certainly would do it again.

This is a fantastic tour (underground tour) and a must whilst you are in Edinburgh. Amazing to think of the horrors people endured living in these vaults. Our guide Shaun was brilliant and very knowledgeable on both history and ghost stories. We didn't see any ghosts but it did feel very unsettling at times down in the darkness. While we... More

We went on the terror tour at 10pm. Our group was met by our guide Esther who was fantastic & really drawn you into everything she was telling you about Edinburgh's haunted past. She the took us to the Niddry Street vaults which was very creepy and had a really different atmosphere than any where else that we had visited.... More

We met our guide (Dale) at St Giles and were taken on an underground tour of some vaults that had lain undiscovered for over 100 tears after being bricked up because of plague murder and no sanitation, Thieves, Beggars and Murderers all frequented these vaults as no others would dare go into them, It was when some students stayed in... We did the 45 minute tour of the vaults at 5pm and it was brilliant. Great to see a bit of history and hear the old stories. We used a tesco voucher so didn't have to pay but I would happily of paid otherwise. A very informative and atmospheric tour with a great guide; the room with the stone circle... More

We booked the graveyard and underground tour. Our guide was Helena and she was very informative telling us lots of history and ghost stories as we made our way around the locations. The Greyfriars kirkyard is interesting and has a lot of history. Quite unnerving to hear that there were between 100,000 and 250,000 people buried there despite there not... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
