The perfect place for a fantastic view of the castle and surprisingly quiet, in an old town alley. You have to climb a few steps from Grassmarket Square to get the perfect picture. I am here almost every time when I'm in Edinburgh. It is always very quiet and away from the crowd. So few people know about it, but it is one of the very best views in Edinburgh. If you are around and want to take a perfect picture of the castle, I recommend everyone to go there. And if you don't want to climb stairs you can get here from Lauriton Pl.

Super easy spot to find in the Grassmarket area. With a nice sign the says whats up the stairs.. The Vennel. lol... If you want just about the best photo spot in Edinburgh this is it. I thought there would be a ton of photographers there.. There were none. I stayed there a couple hours to get perfect sun ect. Its a peaceful place. Get a coffe and spend a hour there taking amazing pictures your friends will all be envious of...

I had a list of places I wanted to see in Edinburgh on my first trip last year. I only made it to Dean Village, so this year I was determined
I stayed at The Rutland House hotel and set off to find The Vennel viewpoint on a cloudy afternoon. It was pretty easy to find and a good hike up to the top.
Lots of people around and relatively clean with good access.
Really interesting view of history and the “other side” of the castle

Great viewpoint & photo opportunity for Edinburgh Castle. Go early morning before it is crowded. Before 10am good. Look for Mary’s Milkbar to find the step.

Beautiful. If you can make it all the way to the top, keep going and you will discover pet of the Flodden wall from the 15th century.

If you want a great photo of the Castle, this is well worth making the effort for. Just off the Grassmarket, climb the steps to the top for an amazing view.

Short walk up and around the private school that overlooks the Royal Mile. The view would of been better without the fog and rain, yet we enjoyed the stroll through the neighborhood just above Grassmarket.

Great view of the castle directly off the grassmarket. Short climb up Miss Jean Brodie’s steps for a great photograph.

I saw a picture from this viewpoint on the internet prior to visiting Scotland. It was definitely on my list of picture spots to find while in Edinburgh.
Vennel Street (or The Vennel as I have seen it referred to) is a narrow, pedestrian only street/walk that connects Heriot Place with the southwest end of Grassmarket Square.
Access by parking on Lauriston Place near the Heriot Place intersection and then get to Vennel by walking a short distance north on Heriot Place. The Flodden Wall will be on your right as you walk north.
Although the picture I saw was taken near dusk, I thought a night picture would be even better. It had rained slightly and the additional sheen the rain gave to the pavement added a great element to my photographs.
Note: Not all maps of downtown Edinburgh may show The Vennel. It definitely shows when you use Google Maps.

A staircase starting from the south-west corner of Grassmarket allows you to reach a panoramic position for the best view of the southern side (which is then the best) of Edinburgh Castle and the underlying Castle Rock on which it is built. If you walk all the way up the staircase you get to where the remains of the city walls are.
