About

Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

    Tour not to be missed
The tour is interesting and not one to miss. Our tour guide Adam, was very informative and kept our attention throughout the tour. Sobering to see the conditions in which people lived. Also the small cafe is welcoming and the coffee is excellent! All the staff were great!

    Immersive Historical Experience!
Really cool! Worth the money. It was very informational, and an immersive experience. Got to really step into history! Daisy was also our tour guide, so I don't know how the others are, but she definitely made it really fun and interesting. She was the best guide we had or came across on our whole trip to Scotland!
Hello, Thank you so much for your review! We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your tour with Daisy, and we'll be sure to pass on your kind words to her. Thank you for visiting! Rebecca, Reservations & Relations Executive The Real Mary King’s Close Part of Continuum Attractions

Must do tour at Mary Kings' close
The guide was terrific at staying in character, and describing other characters and life back in the day. Parallels with the plaque was oddly interesting and it was impressive to see the stature of a woman at that time, which was extremely unusual. Loved the whole experience!

Evoking the past in a fun way
This tour was a unique experience. Our guide Beth was really funny and was able to evoke the circumstances of living here in the past very well. It was great to get a feeling of what it would have been like to be born and carry on here. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is not afraid of tight and narrow spaces.

    can't miss it!
The tour was fabulous! Our guide, Jessica, was simply perfect! The way she talked about the place was intriguing and fascinating, never boring! She has a special gift in involving the audience. I wish all tour guides were like her. She has a passion for what she does (and maybe we were lucky because we were the first group of the day :) Highly recommended. Totally suitable for kids (mine is aged 9).

The Real Mary Kings Close Tour!!
This tour is highly recommended by me! If you love history this will be an awesome way to immerse yourself in what life was like in the 1600's in Old Town. Our tour guide was awesome, his name is Karl by the way, but I'm sure they are all great. The size of the tours are small in number so you can actually hear and see everything they are describing. A sweet gift shop has unique items. Don't forget your Souvenir photo at the end!

    Time-travel like experience
A very interesting and unique visit to the Edinburgh of past times. You get to visit the old homes of people who lived there ages ago and learn their stories. Our guide Emilia was very nice and made the whole tour feel like time travel. Would totally recommend!

    A must visit!
My husband and I spent a weekend in Edinburgh in June and wanted to do some token touristy things. We pre booked this before coming and I am so glad we did!! We absolutely loved the tour, our tour guide Erin was fantastic, she totally made the experience and is brilliant at her job. Would recommend to anyone looking for an hour of history on their Edinburgh trip. Gardyloo!

Very interesting tour, we enjoyed it a lot. Our tour guide was the late Edinburgh poet Robert Fergusson (nowadays known as Matt), who gave as an excellent tour of the Close. He was very knowledgable but also brought a lot of humour into the tour. The store was great as well.

We really enjoyed the special Pride tour. The stories of real LGBTQI+ people who lived in Edinburgh over the last centuries were so interesting. Being there in the actual houses and streets they lived in was amazing. The tour leaders were great actors and very nice and friendly. Highly recommended :)

Our guide Sam was awesome and explained the story of Edinburgh from 400 years ago. We really didn’t know what to expect and this was a very cool experience. Worth the stop.

Nina was our host. Spent too much time acting and getting the group to say oooh and aaah after ‘scary’ room … not very informative and she didn’t remember to let us ask questions until we were in the gift shop!!! Sorry wasn’t worth the money but an experience!!

This was a great tour. Ben who was a tour guide did a fabulous job making the tour entertaining and informative. We got to see houses that were built upon and where Mary Queen of Scots was hanging out before she went to England. Highly recommend. Suspect you can buy tickets the day of the tour.
