Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

This is a guided tour that looks in to the history of the streets of Edinburgh. Our guide was 'Steven Boyd' and I have to say he made it very interesting and realistic. How the streets and houses of Edinburgh were in the past is a difficult concept to get your head round, but being down there you can imagine... More

Great attraction to have in Edinburgh. Live in Edinburgh and my first time there with friends from abroad. Definitely recomment it. For adults and family. Some great spooky stories.

Booked this expecting an informative historical tour. Unfortunately this is just a theatrical tour aimed at Americans who need a bit of blood and gore to keep them entertained. The warning at the start of 'If you feel sick, tell me and I'll get someone to take you out' was a good example of this. The tour guide stayed in... More

Really interesting tour of Edinburgh's hidden history. The tour guide Mel was very informative. We had a great time and really enjoyed ourselves 🙂 I've been to Edinburgh a lot and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for something a little more unique than the typical city museum 5/5

Really enjoyed our visit. Our tour guide was excellent, unsure of her name, but we were the 12:45 tour on 1st December. Would recommend this tour. Very informative and you could ask the tour guide any questions, which she answered.

At £14.50 for an hour's tour we felt this attraction was expensive for what it was. You are NOT allowed to take photos. A lot of the rooms haven't been set out with much to show you how life was lived there. The guide was very knowledgeable and fun. It wasn't as spooky or exciting as we had hoped.

We are sorry to hear that you were a little disappointed by your visit. The one hour fully guided experience takes guests through original streets and houses where the people of Edinburgh would have once lived when these streets were open to the skies. While props and mannequins are used over the course of the tour route, it is the... More

We have been on 2 underground walking tours and the graveyard tours previously. But I would recommend Mary Kings Close above and beyond any other I've been on. Very well put together. Well executed. Guide was excellent. Information was at a decent level. Very very happy with the time we spent here. Highly recommend it.

Interesting short tour which gave an insight to passed times in the city . Got a feel for what life could have been like in the old city . The tour guide did her best to provide an interesting and humorous experience which was only let down by her attempts to do a Scottish accent . Sarah was very approachable... More

Not for the claustrophobic or those who can't do stairs. Isn't too aggressive a climb/decent, but you do need to be steady on your feet. Great look inside old Edinburgh - guides are in character, the story of the visit flows well from room to room. Well paced - plenty of history but not too long. Book it in conjunction... More

We're pleased you enjoyed the tour and felt that the information delivered was well paced and full of history. While there are smaller spaces along the tour route, these are often located next to larger rooms where guests who may suffer from claustrophobia can wait but still feel part of the tour. Thank you for taking the time to share... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
