Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

This lived up to its expectations and more, with great experiences and a fantastic guide Francisco who really made the experience come to life. Very knowledgable and friendly the staff were helpful too. There is a cafe which is nice either before or after for a drink and a bite and the building is a delight. A must when in... More

I was actually so impressed with Real Mary King's close. It was really fun and I learned so much more about Edinburgh than I thought I would. Guide was amazing but I've forgotten his name!!

Really interesting tour. Not easy to get your head round the fact that the city is now built on basically 3 floors of what was previously 8 storey tenements. Guide was a bit condescending when asked questions but very knowledgeable.

The guide was trying so hard to put on a show that it made all of us cringe. This tour is clearly designed for children, not adults, which is unfortunate considering our entire group was adults over 30. I completely zoned out during the portrait part and almost fell asleep during the ghost story bit. (I'm being non-specific here so... More

The Real Mary King's Close is an 'underground' tour of several of the original closes which can be found leading off the Royal Mile. We had a great one hour tour with 'Lang Meg' (actual name is Megan), who was fantastic! She led us through various buildings on the original Mary Kings Close and neighbouring closes, and was a fabulous... More

This one hour tour may be short but gives you a good feel for what life was like for residents of Mary King's Close. I hadn't realised that wealthy and poor lived side by side (or up and down of) one another, so that was an eye opener. The stories were obviously scripted but Pam, our guide, delivered them well... Me and my 2 friends were on the 4.30pm tour today and our host was fantastic (sorry we didn't get her name) The tour was interesting and very worth the money. A little gem, not very well advertised I don't feel. Would 100% recommend this to anyone, it's not scary unless you count a couple of plastic rats :) Thanks... More

I found this very informative, our guide played his part well and played his role as a constable very good. we were guided through a series of small pokey rooms which all had a story behind them. You cant really imagine how life must of been living with a dozen people in one room with the smell, lack of daylight and... More

We were recommended this by our hotel concierge. I am so glad we went along. The tours do sell out very quickly so it's best to pre-book. We turned up and couldn't get on a tour until 3 and a half hours later and luckily stayed nearby. The tour was great. I learnt so much about the history and how... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
