Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

The tour guide was not convincing in his role and the whole underground area was not that impressive "once you've seen one cellar you've seen em all " as my husband said

Visited Edinburgh many times but never been to this attraction. Chris T made the tour interesting and we had a laugh at times as well. If you are interested in history, this is well worth a visit

Our guide, Ryan, was a great historical character actor, and was well informed of the research and history of the closes beneath the city buildings. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they had researched and knew some level of detail of the lives of the people who had actually lived, and died, along these closes. It was a... More

I always thought that Edinburgh was and always had been such a lovely place to live. WRONG!!! Our guide, Rachel in proper costume, gave us the real insight into why Edinburgh was (is) justifiably called Ol' Reekie.

Really interesting tour, I used to think the close was underground but they just built on top of it. Very informative and fun.

We visited The Real Mary King's Close on a weekend break in Edinburgh. The city is steeped in history and the Close for me, is very much part of the city's heritage. It's well worth the entrance fee and you can choose whether to pay for the extras (tour booklet and photograph) which obviously bumps the price up. We never... More

This is a good piece of history and the guide was top notch. I don't know what I was expecting, but it didn't live up to my expectations-very pricey to for something that is only a hour . It's very popular so maybe it's just me. You need to be fit for this and i was beat after it,if you like... More

The tour was informative and showed you around the now underground streets that were once the heart of Edinburgh. Amazing!

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
