Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

Considering the site consists of three Edinburgh Closes (narrow streets), two of which don't exist any more and one that is partly there, there's not a lot to it. The owners (and guides) do their best to spin the experience into an hour, but, not...More

Just okay. Nothing superlative. Very average. The ghost story was quite silly. Guide Fiona was great.

This place is incredible! The tour exceeded my expectations after being advised to visit. It truly is frozen in time and gives you a real feel for the stories I had heard across the other museums and landmarks. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting...More

The neat thing about the Real Mary King's Close is that you get to see a glimpse of what it would have been like to live in Edinburgh in the past. I really enjoy that kind of historic perspective on a place. It was a...More

The tour caters for all sorts and ages. It is an educational tour going from the time of The Plague into the 20th century when the place was used as an air raid shelter during WWII. The guide we had was wonderfully dry. It's fascinating...More

Was disappointed with this tour and the overground tour which was after the underground tour was worst. Requested the guide to speak slower as he seemed in a rush and hard to understand he ignored The request so had no clue what he was talking...More

What an amazing place, situated under the city Chambers on the Royal Mile is the old town. See how people lived in Edinburgh hundreds of years ago. It's amazing to see how the people of Edinburgh lived all these years ago, it feels quite spooky...More

Really enjoyed the real Mary Kings close. Really atmospheric and a good historic tour of the famous close in Edinburgh. We had a brilliant guide called Gemma she really made the tour what it was. Definitely worth seeing if you're in Edinburgh.

It is a very interesting place to go, and the show is well put on, given the numbers they push through. Bit overpriced.

Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

i dont see it being an issue. the ground can be a little uneavan but there are lights and the guide pointed it out. the only issue might be the 38 steps down then back up again - would depend on how she feels

Thinking of going when I come to Edinburgh with my 5 year old, he likes the idea of going and I personally don't think he'd be scared as he likes watching ghost adventures and stuff but just wondering people's opinions as seen a few saying it would be too scary for kids?

I wouldn't recommend it, even if it wasn't scary, the air and smell can have an affect, a young person in our group felt really poorly and they discontinued the tour. Hope this helps
