To be honest I do feel that this tour is slightly overpriced. And I was expecting a little better. However, the only reason I am giving the experience five stars is due to the tour guide we had, Ernest. He knew his stuff and you could tell he was very passionate about his job. He was friendly, funny and outgoing... More

The tour was great and the guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We certainly learned a lot and the time flew by. However, I have to say that it seems like a license to print money. . . unless the guides are paid fortunes! It was interesting to visit an old Edinburgh street and get an idea of how crowded... I have visited Mary Kings Close several times over the years and today brought my brother for his first visit along with my partner. The tour guides are always really knowledgeable, friendly and have good banter. Today we had Francisco from Venezuela who was absolutely brilliant and gave us a wee laugh along the way. Would highly recommend a tour... More

The close itself was quite interesting but the tour was a bit Cheesey with some awkward moments .. I guess it comes down to the tour guide you get given. I don't think the tour is worth it , unless it's a rainy day perhaps!

A group of us were on a visit to Edinburgh and decided to take the tour of Mary Kings Close. Extremely interesting history and stories along the tour brilliantly delivered by the lovely Sarah. Definitely something you need to see if you are in Edinburgh. The only thing I would say is that it is slightly overpriced, this may be... More

I can recommend visiting " the 17th century streets frozen in time" as a fascinating experience. We had a very good guide, who gave good background information with a sense of humour.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
