Neighbourhood: Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.

- rebecca c101 contributionsGreat family entertainment, reasonably priced cafe, great planetarium & interactive experience.Visited with my 14 year old who had never been to a planetarium - it didn't disappoint! We watched the "what's up? " star gazing film in the planetarium, which was great. The cafe was fairly priced - a welcome change for attraction cafes which often take liberties with their captive audience. Staff throughout were enthusiastic and engaging & the whole experience was fun. In places it was geared to a younger audience & in others older audiences (star formation), so it struck the right balance for good family entertainment, which can be tricky to achieve. We really enjoyed it and would deffo recommend it.Hi rebeccaF997VN Thank you for your wonderful feedback. Our planetarium team will be delighted to hear their efforts delivering our live shows are well appreciated! - maryfabuk81275 contributionsWell worth a visit.Great place for a day out. We went with our children, ranging from 18 to 8 years old and they all enjoyed it. Not many places manage to entertain them all at the same time! The staff were so friendly and helpful too. The auditorium was fantastic. We saw We Are Stars which was great. I've never been in a planetarium before so it was a great experience. I love the concept of moving through time, experiencing the Arctic and volcanoes etc. Really enjoyed it and I'd recommend this to anyone who fancies a different day out.Hi maryfabuk81, Thank you for your kind review. - Jonathan BLondon, United Kingdom5 contributionsGood fun for everyone at Dynamic EarthThe tour was very well put together, atmospheric and engaging. it takes you through the passage of time and has plenty for everyone to get interested. The 3D experience was good and the planetarium was worth the full price of the ticket. Only downside was the cafe had very limited options, so I would make sure you are fed before you go and take snacksHi Z2752LJjonathanb Thank you for taking the time to review us. - Alan HStirling, United Kingdom60 contributionsAn amazing educational and entertaining experienceOn our arrival we were left wondering what we were getting for our money, information signs on where to start was lacking. However, one of the very the helpful start set us on the way to the initial geology exhibit. The experience then started as an escorted tour into a simulated elevator that gave a real feeling of descending through millennia with scrolling images on the screen walls accompanied by shaking of the floor. After a commentated display of Earth's early days with more floor shaking we moved on to the rest of the tour which took us into large screen displays of Earth's physical and biotic features. Later on this took the form of a 3D presentation, anyone who suffered from travel sickness should really swallow a tablet before going to these presentations. This was followed by displays of evolution, polar environments (with an enormous lump of ice in it) and marine research and environments. I went with a 9yr old and a 5yr old who both enjoyed the experience at different levels but I think this experience would be best for 8 - adult. Some craft activities were provided in the eating hall and was a good wind down for kids. My wife and I will probably return for a more in depth visit at a future date. The restaurant had a reasonable menu and was reasonably priced but people are also welcome to bring packed lunches. Overall, I would thoroughly recommend visiting here.Hi AlanH570, Thank you for taking the time to review us, and for your detailed and kind feedback. - The wandering wagon2 contributionsFun and educational! We decided to take a trip not knowing much about the place in advance and only allowed a short time to visit. That was a mistake! We planned on going for the planetarium not realising how much else there was to do, sadly we had to rush though most of it but what we experienced was fantastic and we plan on returning and dedicating a lot more time to explore this gem. Visited with my boyfriend and we ultimately concluded that we were too old to enjoy the experience (aged 20 & 23 respectively). As previous comments stated the walk through experience was mediocre and full of videos which were similar to ones we’d seen at school. The whole thing was very quiet which made the experience a bit awkward as it was just the both of us walking around for about 30 minutes until we seen other visitors.
However, our day was saved by the wonderful staff. Firstly at the cafe as a girl with dyed hair (sorry didn’t make out the name tag) went out of her way to get us ice and sealable cups that we could take around with us. The planetarium was incredible and we were both in awe of the man’s knowledge. The visuals were amazing and it really did make up for the whole experience.
Overall if you’re looking for value for money I wouldn’t really recommend, I’d honestly just go back for the planetarium only.

Thanks for taking the time to share your views with us, we are really glad to hear that overall you enjoyed your visit and were blown away by our new Planetarium live show! We will be sure to pass on your positive feedback to the Planetarium Manager, and also to the Cafe team regarding your experience here. The attraction may seem less busy at the moment, as we are severely restricted on the number of visitors we can permit indoors due to social distancing measures and the current covid guidelines - we wish to ensure all our guests and staff are safe & comfortable in their experience, and this may mean you will have some areas to yourself while visiting! Managed to get a decent booking where many other attractions fully booked up (England half-term). Used the Hop On/Off bus tour to access, which was easy enough and added some extra local history.
Staff were consistently friendly and helpful and attentive to our young children. The walk-through tour is great, fun, interactive, educational. The time machine & visiting of ancient history is great fun, our kids were so excited. The 4D rain forest flight was also a firm favourite.
We saw the CapCom film at the planetarium which was exceptional. Really worthwhile doing.
Losing one star/rating owing to the cafe experience. Young staff seemed overwhelmed, the queue to be seated rarely abated all the time we were there (early afternoon on a Wednesday). Once seated, and all we really wanted was water or some soft drinks, after some wait we had to request service. Arrival of drinks was slow and finding anyone to request the bill prior to our pending Planetarium showing was hard work. It was apparent from other diners comments to staff that ours was not a unique experience. The only thing marring an otherwise lovely family trip.

Really enjoyed our visit to Dynamic Earth. Everything is’hands on’ for children. It is well layed out and you can look / read at your own pace. I wouldn’t recommend it for younger children as there are sections that require them to listen for a period of time. I would recommend for 7+.

Absolutely fantastic place! The main tour itself was great, lots to see and do for all ages. The only negative really relates to COVID and the planetarium feature (which is an additional fee to attend). Although there were sanitizer stations positioned all over, the entrance to the planetarium was cramped with around 35/40 people in a really small space. In our opinion the cinema room was too full to effectively reduce transmission risk. Most seats were taken (even seats with stickers saying do not use had people on them). We didn't feel comfortable so got up to leave when a kind lady in a smaller group offered to move so we could spread out. Before the film started all doors were closed which again didn't help with air flow but we decided to stick it out as our daughter was desperate to stay. The film was excellent but I'd be reluctant to go again with the current arrangements in place.

Very disappointing experience. Waited 20 minutes over our booked time slot to be allowed in. We were then guided around the back corridors rather than through the ‘time travel’ lift. They’d stuck a few random dinosaur figures to play out the fact that they were taking us through around the back. Each room is just a big video screen with stuff you learn in school, couple more figures along the way. A few interactive screens. Then had to wait 15 minutes to do the final video experience with 3D glasses at the end. Couldn’t wait for it to finish.
I absolutely appreciate that covid means things have to be run differently but this was a joke. It needs to be looked at again. Space out people’s bookings so each group can go around at a good pace instead of having to wait between each section.
Credit to the staff who are doing their best to keep things light and entertaining.
If you’ve got kids then it’ll be somewhat entertaining for them, but if you’re an adult thinking this is going to be something to pass an hour or so on a trip to Edinburgh go somewhere else.

Thank you for providing us with your feedback, and sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your time at our attraction.
We are currently operating under very strict legislation due to the global Covid 19 pandemic and all visits must be booked in advance into timed slots, so as to limit the numbers permitted in each area of the attraction, and to allow for the required physical distancing measures etc to be adhered to. Unfortunately, this can mean that on particularly busy days or where customers arrive late etc there can be issues and delays in entering areas of the attraction. The 'Time Machine' lift cannot be used at the moment as it would mean a large group of people in an enclosed space together, hence we are having to take an alternative route back to the beginning of time right now. We do apologise that this has impacted your experience on this occasion and we are looking at ways to improve this for our guests going forward. With best wishes, DE

You’ve got to be into science to love this. Science centre in Glasgow is much more family friendly and interactive. £64 for 2 adults & 3 kids, which seems a little expensive for what we got. Presentations were over the head of us adults, let alone the 3 kids aged 6 & 8. Maybe we didn’t research it properly before going.

Thanks for your feedback, and sorry to hear that you were somewhat disappointed with your experience. We are not a traditional 'science centre' in that we focus on planet Earth specifically and the attraction experience is an interactive "journey through time" rather than a science mall / museum layout. We do appreciate that this type of attraction may not be for everyone though! With best wishes, DE

Rather disappointing, I would not say this is a child friendly exhibit. There is a lot of reading and not much interactive exhibits to keep kids entertained. You are hearded through in groups of 4 families through each section and it takes 90min to get around the exhibit. Staff were friendly and appeared knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but I do not recommend this as a family day out with young children.

We arrived here at 1.45 and were immediately told to go and buy entrance tickets as the desk closed at 2.30. We did this and were astonished to find we had to pay the full entrance fee, considering the place closed at 4.30. We then enquired about getting something to eat, and went to the cafe. Ordered baked potato and tuna for the adults and macaroni cheese and chips for a child. Sat down to eat to be told we needed to be down stairs by 2.30 as that was the last entry time. All the "hot" food was cold, couldn't eat it, disgusting. Had then to run with 2 small children so didn't get time to complain to anyone. Went round the exhibits, this part was good, but then literally thrown out at 4.30. Welcome to Scotland. Not impressed. Would like to see their hot food temperature records. !!!!

Absolutely brilliant visit to Dynamic Earth with my 7 and 10 year olds. They really liked the footage of Apollo 11 landing (CapCom show at the planetarium) and the tour of the biomes. They thought that the graphics were great quality and they “weren’t expecting anything like it.”
One thing stood out to me. All the staff were really relaxed, friendly, chatty and seemed to really enjoy being at work. It made for a really great atmosphere and there was no shortage of staff to explain the different areas and engage with the children.
The cafe could be slightly more exciting but I’m typing while my children demolish their lunch here so clearly they hit the mark with children.
Highly recommend a visit here, great value and we could easily have spent 3-4 hours here.

This is a wonderful exhibit! There were plentiful guides, and they were cheerful and efficient and seemed pleased to be there. They behaved as if I was traveling in a time machine back to the start of the earth, and then moving forward in time, exhibit room by exhibit room. A group at a time) is escorted into and out of each room for active, engaging exhibits that move through the ages of the earth from the Big Bang. When you’re in the earthquake room and they tell you to hold on, DO IT! Two rooms have sweeping flight videos over the earth, and I wish I had taken motion sickness pills. The exhibit on animals was really good, especially the dinosaur coming through the ceiling. And the rain forest was amazing. There were lots of interactive parts to most rooms, as well. The final room was the planetarium, which showed when I was there a video about atoms and molecules and how they fit together that would be understandable and enjoyable for any age over about 4, I think. This was one of my favorite museums.

At the moment, we are open 7 days a week, from 10:00 - 17:30 (last entry at 16:00) please do double check our website first though, as different seasonal hours apply from November to February. We do have quite a few school groups who visit in the weekday mornings during term-time, so if you'd like to visit when it's a little quieter, after lunch may be better! You will need around 2-3 hours to see the whole attraction & view a Show Dome movie. Best wishes, Dynamic Earth

You arrive at the edge of the rainforest with dense buttress trees, ferns and creepers. Tropical birds calling, monkeys chattering and the rustling of trees are all noises you will hear, along with smelling the humid sticky air. Come face to face with rainforest animals; an endangered clouded leopard hides amongst the trees, a komodo dragon lurks by the stream and an orang-utan is swinging in the branches.
The animals get excited and the atmosphere gets noisier as the skies turn black and thunder rolls! Look out for the torrential tropical rainstorm!
And whilst all that’s going on there’s also a really interesting, informative talk

Hi Sue! Most of our visitors will spend around 2-3 hours exploring the attraction, viewing one of our Show Dome planetarium films and taking part in our new Augmented Reality quiz. We do have a Gift Shop and Cafe onsite, so you may want to allow time for shopping or lunch. During the Scottish school holidays, we are also running lots of additional drop-in family activities which are included in your admission tickets, so again, extra time may be required for this. I’d really like to visit here with my 1 year old daughter. Is there anything for her to do/see? Any tips or advice for visiting with a toddler?

Some of the experiences involve big screens and loud sounds so it could be a bit overwhelming so ear protectors would be a good precaution. There are staff in every room and shortcuts through so you could bypass some of the bits that were too noisy.

Considering a visit one day during England half term (18-22 Feb) or at a weekend. What is likely to be less busy? Thanks.

You could always start you visit on Saturday just after opening, that way you might have a chance to avoid crowds, but there is only way to go inside so is not that much of the problem, in my opinion. And in afternoon you could visit edinburgh and then come back to Newcastle.
