Best Tour I've Been On

I've toured 31 countries in Europe and the trips with The Hairy Coo were by far the best I've done. It is great to get off the beaten path. You won't be disappointed!

We had a wonderful day touring the highlands. Russell was a brilliant tour guide. His knowledge of Scottish history was amazing. He was fun, friendly, intelligent, and entertaining. Our party of six all agreed it was one of the highlights of our vacation. PJS - Brookfield, CT USA

Three of us joined this one-day tour and had fun! It's a good way to have a glimpse of Scotland if you've got limited time for the visit. The tour guide Martin was very helpful and friendly. He tried his best to answer all kinds of questions from us.

Yay for the Hairy Coo!!! I booked my day trip months before I even got to Edinburgh. That is how well I thought of this tour. The day of the tour was dreary, but Donald made me forget all about it with his stories and history lessons. From Sterling Castle to The Wallace Monument to the Hairy Coo's it was... More

We took both the free Highland tour and the St. Andrews tour with Nic. She was amazing. Always smiling, super friendly, ready to take your picture, offer advice on things to see and places to eat. We learned so much about Scotland's history and were kept amused with various stories and an eclectic sampling of Scottish music. What you see... More

I had already done the Free Scottish Highlands tour with them, so I knew the St. Andrews tour was going to be good, too! And it didn't disappoint! My guide this time was Russell and just like the tour with Donald it was full of great history info and scottish music! I have to admit I was a little sad... More

If you wish to visit the highlands, I would definitely recommend Hairy Coo Tours. The guide was professional, eloquent and engaging. We were brought to see the Forth Rail bridge, a few loches, the famous hairy coos, and tried some local dishes along the way. It was definitely a well-planned tour of the highlands. The best part is: you get... More

Pro's: "free" (you tip the guide), less crowded attractions, local guide ('The Don'), nice bus (Dolly), friendly coos to meet and feed, you spend as much or more time off the bus as on it! Con's: few if any. Maybe what I thought it could use more of (i.e. scotch whisky, golf etc.) was addressed on a different tour or... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
