The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.

We did this as a group of 6 friends on the afternoon of New Year's Eve.

Our instructors Lizzie and Hayleigh were superb and showed us several different throwing methods before putting us into teams for a light hearted competition.

Excellent fun. Good value for money. Would definitely recommend!

My mother and I went here on our last day in Edinburgh. We were welcomed by Hannah and Emi, who were wonderful hosts.
Axe throwing was the activity my mother was looking the least forward to, but ended up being one of her favourite experiences from the whole trip!
We had a great time! Thank you so much Hannah and Emi for the fun and laughter!

We went to Black Axe as a group of 4 and overall it was a good experience and everyone had a good time but there are some elements I didn't quite enjoy. First of all the location is at Summerhall which is a fantastic location but when you get into Summerhall, finding the location of BlackAxe isn't easy, especially when there is no signage, the reception sends you the wrong way which resulted in our group and a completely different group wandering Summerhall trying to find Black Axe (We ended up almost everywhere else)

We were greeted by two hosts which for the most part where helpful teaching us different methods of throwing axes. The area is fairly small but has three targets to throw axes at which is good fun. It was my party of 4 than a guy and girl.

At one point of the games, one of the hosts made a random sexual innuendo at the expense of the guy from the other group when referring to the girl of the group and her method of throwing an axe without knowing any sort of context which fell flat and was completely inappropriate/unprofessional and I noticed what looked like a beer which I can only assume belonged to one of the hosts.

Minus this, it was a good fun hour of throwing axes and I would only improve the way that the hosts interact with their customers and put up proper signage.

My husband discovered Black Axe when he attended a social event with his work colleagues in 2019. From his description and photos, it sounded amazing, and I said I'd love to go; he bought me a voucher for my birthday in late 2019 (which was valid for a year).

We were supposed to go in spring 2020, but Covid (as well as several health issues on my part) put a stop to that. I e-mailed them to ask about the voucher's validity, and the wonderful Gareth got back to me confirming they'd be happy to extend the voucher, given the circumstances (thanks again for this excellent customer service; your flexibility was very much appreciated!)

For my birthday this year, we were finally able to make it along, and we had an absolutely amazing time!

On the day, you're given a safety form to complete, then taken through a safety briefing which, although brief, is comprehensive and reassuring. Then, the instructor shows you a few different throws, lets you practise each one a few times, offers advice on how to improve your throw, stance, etc., and then you're allowed some "free range" practise time to improve your technique further. Towards the end, we had a friendly competition with the other people in our session, which was good natured, and great fun.

Our instructor was friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful when it came to providing personalised pointers and advice. When I got an axe in the board, he enthusiastically offered praise and encouragement (and when I didn't, he was supportive, telling me what I was doing right, and offering a little advice for my next throw). Having never thrown an axe in my life before, I was surprised at how accessible it is.

I didn't think I'd have much success, yet it was satisfyingly much easier than I'd anticipated! The feeling of elation when you get a few consecutive axes in the target is amazing, and it appears to be one of those things that, once you get a bit of a feel for it, becomes easier with a little practise (practise makes you better at most things, of course, yet I didn't expect to accomplish as much as I did within the hour-long session).

Two of the photos I've added to my review are of my husband, and the other two are photos of a couple of my own throws; I didn't expect to get a good "strike rate", yet it was much easier than I expected.

I don't have great upper body strength, yet this is much more about technique than strength, and it was immense fun!

I'd also like to give massive props to our instructor (whose name I'm afraid I've forgotten). Note to Black Axe: we were on the 2pm session on Sat 6th November, and our instructor has awesome, funky hair; he's a genuine asset to the team, so please pass on our sincerest thanks.

I can't wait to go back and improve further!

Wow! Thanks so much for leaving such a detailed review! This is exactly the experience we want our guests to enjoy and we're so pleased we could make it a worthwhile way to spend a birthday, especially after waiting so long to finally come and visit us! I have passed on your compliments to Felix, now and forevermore dubbed "Funky Felix" in honour of this glowing review! From all of us at Black Axe, take care and we hope to see you back some time soon! Looks like you've got some potential from those photos!

This was hands-down one of the most exciting things we have ever done as a couple. You are given individual axe-throwing lessons, followed by a competition towards the end. It is a nice way to meet new people and have a good laugh! We highly recommend this attraction to couples or large groups of friends!

Brilliant way to spend time in Edinburgh. Our friends booked this as a birthday present for my husband. Was a bit more difficult than we thought it was going to be but once we mastered it was so much fun.
Have to say my arm was aching the next morning.

When arriving the venue looks a bit dodgy and unprofessional that all changes when the guy (can't remember his name) collects you for your session and the fun starts.

It's well organised and the time flies as you're shown through different techniques, my Girlfriend was a little apprehensive at first but loved it by the time we left.

Well worth a visit.

What a great activity for groups - we were a group of 5 friends, and there was another group of 7 which made the competition fun.

Barry, our instructor, was brilliant and made it really good fun, as well as feeling like he knows his stuff.

A definite must-do for something a bit different!

A must visit in Edinburgh!

Our group size was really good (around 9 people)! There are three targets to throw axes at so you didn’t have to wait around for too long!

Our teacher was very funny and gave great advise on how to throw/improve our technique.

Would recommend this as an evening activity (takes about an hour)!
