Top ways to experience Edinburgh Waverley Station
The area
Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

    Bar at Edinburgh Waverley station
Visited the bar at Edinburgh Waverley station as my train was cancelled. Another train was due in 45 minutes so went to bar to have 1 drink as I waited. 1 glass of Prosecco was £10.40 absolute ridiculous pricing. Definitely won’t visit again.

Not a Very Good Overall Experience.
Edinburgh Waverley Station, while serving as a central transport hub, does have a few areas where improvements could be made to enhance the overall experience. While it may not stand out as Scotland's capital's main station, it still offers convenience and accessibility for travelers. One notable drawback is the limited availability of waiting seating within the station. Finding a seat during peak hours can be a challenge, leaving some passengers without a comfortable place to wait. Expanding the seating options would greatly improve the overall comfort of the station. Additionally, the location of the taxi queue, not directly in front of the station, requires a short walk and can be confusing for first-time visitors. Clear signage directing passengers to the taxi queue would be beneficial, allowing for a smoother and more efficient transition from the station to their onward journey. For families with children or travelers with heavy luggage, it is important to note that walking to the city center from the station may be more challenging than anticipated. While Google Maps may suggest a short 15-minute walk, the path can be steep and hilly, requiring significant effort, especially with trolleys and large luggage. It is advisable to consider alternative transportation options, such as taxis, to avoid unnecessary strain.

Great assistance at ticket information desk
Chaotic place at present, with roadworks going on. Road rage outside the place, but the man at the information desk was very helpful. Explained both tram and bus options to get me to the airport. Bustling place.

Normally a great station for disabled people.
Only fave a 5 star due to the lovely Laura from the travel desk. Normally this is a brilliant station for disabled people but after a traumatic journey yet again on the aweful avanti west coast line, no one was there to meet me with a wheelchair. I walked a little way with my son and then my crutches slipped on an oily concourse amd almost went over but my son caught me, unfortunatelyi twisted my amkle amd ita like a balloon today. I had booked passenger assist and this wouldn't have happened had they been there. So, Laura from the travel desk, you were my actual hero yesterday, thank you 10 times over.

Don't count on storing luggage at Edinburgh Waverly Station
Signs were not very helpful and late announcement of departure platform for the train to Aberdeen, and another last minute change on top of that caused quite a scramble. Apparently reservations mean nothing on Scotrail!! However the biggest surprise, and an expensive one, was the fact that the left luggage (bag storage) at the station only accepted small carry-on size items and would not take our large bags. Resulted in us having to store our bags at the "Luggage Store" selling luggage in the adjacent Waverly Mall for UKP 12 /per bag/2 hours. That was one time that I did not smile at the "pun."

    Not the day out planned
Took a trip to Edinburgh and planned a trip to the Xmas market. However market was mobbed (thats another story) Then went to Camera Obscura which was amazing. Kids loved it. Had something to eat and headed back to station. Ten minutes before train due there was an announcement to say we had to evacuate and make our way to nearest exit. We came out on Princes Street. However no one from the station was at the exit and people were still heading in.Decided to take my grandchidren home on the bus.Cannot find anything online to say why there was an evacuation

    Britain’s 2nd Largest Train Station.
Haven’t been here for years - so obviously noticed a lot of changes. Much modernisation and streamlining has taken place in Britain’s 2nd largest station ( 25 acres) but somehow it seems to have lost a bit of its traditional character ( or maybe I’m just being nostalgic) . It can seem slightly overwhelming as it’s so big and busy - with 18 platforms in use , and apparently approximately 30,000 people passing through each day - but it’s airy, clean and efficient , with a varied section of shops and cafes .

The BEST member of staff in the ticket booking office.
His name was a wonderful exotic name. Siussi. Suissa. ? Lovely lovely man. Around 25-30 in age.
In short. I was stuck without enough cash from my business to travel. I’d had a card stolen earlier in the day. Long story. I had no money or at least enough to get a ticket home. The lovely man paid for part of my ticket. All this happened around 16-45 hrs on Tuesday 21 May.
I got the 17.00hrs train. Arrived home in York safe.
A big gracious Thankyou to this lovely man.

Really rude staff at information desk, I asked about my platform information, she rolled her eyes and her answer is not helpful at all, her attitude makes me really uncomfortable. I don’t know if she treats me like this because of my race or she is just rude in general

Visited the LNER lounge while waiting for my train. Very disappointing experience. Both self service drinks machines were out of order. Travellers were offered instead drinks out of vacuum flasks labelled “Coffee”. What was inside neither smelled or tasted of coffee! More like Luke warm coloured water. It would have been better to forget about these and just offer cold drinks from the fridge instead. LNER should be offering a better service than this.
