If you want to look up a lot of records, coming here in person is definitely better value than searching the ScotlandsPeople website. The staff are so helpful, they translated quite a few words that I couldn't figure out. This is also the only place you can access Scottish kirk sessions records. It's an easy five-minute walk from Waverly Station,... More

A whole day sounds long enough, but it's surprising just how quickly the day whizzes by. So, if you are there for filling in lots of details in your family tree, make sure your list of names, dates and events is prepared in advance. Then you can home in on the records you want very efficiently. Nice roomy atmosphere and... More

Have traveled from Glasgow to Edinburgh to carry out family tree research several times. £15 for a whole day with the computers being quick and easy to use. Staff are friendly and the premises are very clean and tidy. If you are unable to read the entry due to the hand writing then the entry can be re-scanned for you... More

Fantastic building and staff are very helpful. Spent a full day in the search rooms and time went way to quickly! Can't wait for my next visit.

I was here with a friend who was researching his Scottish past-- he was not expecting the 15 pound fee but the staff gave him some data anyway. Wonderful facility, really gracious staff, nice location near other attractions. It has a really great gift shop as well with choices of books and such that go beyond just Scottish interest, and... This was my first visit to the Scotlandspeople Centre. Previously been to the old GRO building around the corner in the past. It's £15 for the day and it's very easy to search for your ancestors. Nowadays it's all on computer, you just sit and search for the people & events you want and you then get a list of... More

We spent an afternoon here looking for some family connections. We paid for the research aide and were incredibly impressed. Not only did we find some information, but when we got home we emailed with more information and a research assistant there was able to find information that we had thought did not exist from the searching we had been... Went to the Registry House to look up my family whilst in Edinburgh two weeks ago. What a great place. Robert Bailey was so helpful, he was 'at the ready' whenever I needed assistance. When I ran into a dead end, he helped me go in a different direction. I loved it, could have sat there all day if i... More

We spent the day at the ScotlandsPeople Centre trying to trace back our Scottish ancestry. The facitlities are excellent and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Even a full day of research is not nearly enough so we will have to resort to the Internet to access the registry's records. We are hoping that the Internet version is as... More

I have been tracing my Scottish family history for 15 years now and have visited the Scotlandspeople Centre about 5 or 6 times whilst on holiday. It is an absolutely brilliant place and for a daily fee of £15 you can see the actual deatils on birth, marriage & death certificates, the 1911 and earlier census and Wills up to... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
