Having reviewed on Trip Advisor what we could visit in Dumfries we chose the Savings Bank Museum. A wee bit out of the way but sat nav helped us get there. This is a really interesting place to visit. Its tiny inside but packed with lots of information. The guide offered to let us browse or have the 'tour'. This... More

What a great place to visit, the amount of history in such a small building was impressive. The lady who was very friendly, gave us a great amount of historical detail about how the T.S.B. started here. It was very interesting, with lots of artifacts to look at.Never thought how important this place was in the banking history, Well worth going... More

This is a tiny museum. There were 18 in our group and it was a bit of a squeeze getting everyone into a small room in a small cottage. However, it was well worth it - a fascinating insight into the development of Savings banks, which originated in this humble cottage. Apart from the history element, there is also a... More

One of our party wanted to visit - I confess that I'd not heard of it, apart from a mention in "Bollocks to Alton Towers" or one of those series - but we made the detour and were glad we did. The drive was interesting, along narrow twisting roads, and I would recommend satnav. However once there it is a... More

Fantastic place. Cottage well maintained. We were greeted at the door by Mhairi who was friendly and warm and very very informed! The original items still in the cottage was amazing. She also showed us some old bank notes which we had never seen before! Would recommend very highly.

We had read about the museum and as we were staying nearby, decided to call in on our way to Carlisle. So glad we did as the lady who was working that day had a vast knowledge of the founder etc and made it such an interesting visit. The collection of savings tins is brilliant as are the other exhibits... More

What on earth is a "Savings Banks" museum? We passed by several times on our way to other places, but finally could not resist. Off on a typical rural Scottish side road, you drive through Ruthwell to find the museum, which turns out to be the location of the very first "Savings" bank in the world. When it first opened... It was a cloudy afternoon. We had been driving around Dumfries looking for something to do all morning and other than a somewhat pleasant stop at an ice cream parlour, I was about ready to mark the day as wasted. That was until we saw it. We were heading back to our accommodation when a brown and blue sign caught... More
