About
Trimontium Museum tells the story of the Roman fort complex at nearby Newstead. Trimontium was a frontier post at the outer limits of the Roman Empire, and served as a base for further incursions to the north. Rediscovered and excavated in the early 20th century, it has produced some of the finest Roman artefacts ever found in Scotland and is also home to the most northerly amphitheatre - so far - found in the Empire. The Trimontium Museum was established over 30 years ago to tell the story of the frontier post and its people, and put some of the finds on public display. Following major renovation and modernisation, the new Trimontium Museum reopened on August 2nd 2021. There are weekly guided walks to the fort site and around the town April- October. The Trimontium Museum is a voluntary organisation and welcomes new members to help us tell the story of our unique site.

This is a very lovely museum, its quite small but very well laid out, The volunteers/members of staff are extremely helpful, the lady who I spoke to explained how far away Trimotium is from where Melrose is. Lots of interesting items that they found and I thought the films they put on where very interesting about the finds and history of the old Roman fort

I have been intending to visit this museum since it opened. I finally made it and was not disappointed.
Parking - There is limited parking outside the museum but we had parked in the town's main car park
We were warmly welcomed by enthusiastic volunteers and soon paid up, the concession rate and my wife admitted as my carer.

Whilst we did not use the toilets, the website advised that here are also 2 unisex accessible toilets, one of which is accessible via a chair lift, and one on the ground floor

The layout of the museum was very well explained to us and advised that I would be best sitting my wheelchair at the doorway to watch the videos. This I did and it worked fine as the museum was quiet.

The displays (In cabinets) were clearly laid out and easy to look at from a wheelchair.

I hsve been wanting to visit this museum since it opened. Yesterday I made it.

I found the museum to be well laid out, with so many interesting displays.

Bring in a wheelchair bit not make things difficult at all.

The volunteers at thr museum were very welcome and shared their knowledge without overwhelming me.

I shall definitely return

This is a small museum but the exhibits are outstanding and very well presented. The films give a good overview of the history and finds that make up the Roman site, which is also worth a visit. We went on the tour arranged by the museum and, despite the weather, it was fascinating.

The Trimontium Museum has always been a treasure trove of Roman artefacts and exhibits. It's also the only museum dedicate to the Romans in the north of Britain. Recently, it's undergone a major refurbishment, and it looks fantastic. There are dozens of original and replica Roman artifacts, as well as a stunning audio-visual display about the Romans in southern Scotland and Northern England. The replica weaponry and armour is worth looking out for.

The volunteers are so welcoming and friendly, and it's clear that the modernised museum is the (rightly) pride of the local community . It's also dog friendly, and they give out free doggy treats!!!

It's worth visiting Melrose just to see this wonderful, modern museum.

This is a small but perfectly formed museum which welcomes dogs ( free dog biscuits on offer).
Tracing the Roman occupation of Scotland based upon the Trimontium fort at the Tweed crossing, most of the items are from the rubbish pits of the said fort.
Modern mock ups of military uniforms and weaponry are on show.
There are several very informative films.
Helpful staff and volunteers.

We visited the museum and also went on the guided Trimontium walk. We were guided by one of the museum volunteers, Geraldine. Geraldine was friendly, fun and extremely knowledgeable. She gave us an excellent overview of the history of the Trimontium site and left us feeling excited about what we had found out and keen to learn more. Our dog was very welcome on the walk and well looked after by Geraldine who went out of her way to make sure he had access to water on a hot day. I’d thoroughly recommend this as an interactive way to see the site and learn about its history and the archaeology.

The museum itself is also excellent and packed with interesting exhibits and a great shop. Everyone there was incredibly friendly and our dog was welcome in the museum itself. A first for us!

This small museum provides a wonderful and surprisingly complete survey of life on this edge of empire. The finds include Iron Age findings as well an Roman items. The displays bring alive a time and place most of us think we know, thanks to Hollywood. This museum helps us appreciate the difficulties experienced by the legions as well as their successes.
The site of the large legionary camp just out side of Melrose (Roman Trimontium) lacks the extensive
