Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past more than Abbotsford, stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott. Our new FREE to access Visitor Centre is home to a Stylish Restaurant, Gift Shop and Exhibition on the life and legacy of Sir Walter Scott.

Abbotsford continues to be one of my favorite manor houses in all of the UK. It's smaller and has amore personal feeling that others lack. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. The gardens are wonderful!

The house is in a beautiful setting and interesting enough inside but it fails to really inform you about Scott. Little his made of his novels or poetry and more could be done to help understanding of these. Apart from the few rooms on view,...More

Found the setting of the house and garden charming. Greeted by a friendly guide who explained the audio system which worked very well and the interior was fascinating and gave one a great insight into Sir Walter Scott's character and life at Abbotsford. The Visitor's...More

The home of Sir Walter Scott. Worth a visit if only to see his library. A couple of hours will see you around the house and garden and give you a fascinating insite into one of the worlds greatest writers.

Abbotsford was the home of Sir Walter Scott, we really enjoyed our informative visit. The staff were friendly and helpful, it was a pity only the ground floor is open to the public. The gardens are lovely but not at their best at this time...More

Walter Scott was the only 19th century author I liked, but I find myself ambivalent about Abbotsford. A lot of money has been spent here, especially on the excellent visitors' centre. The house is only open on the ground floor, and we felt that there...More

Abbotsford House on the banks of the River Tweed is in a stunning location. No wonder he wanted to live in this spot! Visitors can only see a small part of the house on the ground floor but headsets with an excellent commentary guided you...More

We visited Abbotsford House, the home of Sir Walter Scott, while on a Globus tour. Barbara was an excellent guide, reliving many of the personal stories of Sir Walter. She made the home come alive and opened our eyes to his philanthropic nature. The gardens...More
