I visited Derry and found the city to be absolutely lovely steeped in history and I wealked the walls and visited the walled barracks over the peace bridge but I was disapointed to see that the peace flame was not lit??? why is it not kept alight?

When I hear about stopping by a 'Peace Flame' my intial reaction was 'really'? (sigh) Again, this is about context, and I hadn't been on our city tour but the stop was worthy. I remain glad that we stopped.

I enjoyed a short visit to the Peace Flame set in a small decorative garden by the Guild Hall just across the river from the Peace Bridge.
What's nice, aside from the manicured lawns and flowers, is the little tiles that line the four entrances to the garden designed by primary school students from both sides of the religious community. They are endearing and wonderfully appropriate.
There are pkenty of benches to sit and contemplate.
The Flame is worth visiting in its own right but if you are in the Guild Hall or crossing the Peace Bridge it would be a real shame to miss it.

Although we only had a couple of hours for a lunch break at the Guild Hall, I would highly recommend the Guild Hall Cafe for lunch. Wonderful fresh home-made food. Also it's interesting to have a quick look through the Guild Hall with its spectacular stained glass windows, and view the walled city (with cannons) out the back of the hall, in the Square. Met some lovely people in the square from the city of Derry. Cross the road to view the famous Peace Flame and Peace Bridge that is a testimony to the peace process at the end of the period of "the troubles" in N. Ireland. Wish I had more time to explore the castle and walk across the Peace Bridge over the River Foyle.

And next to the Guildhall. It was lit by children of Derry on both sides of the Troubles in 2013. The key speaker at its lighting was Martin Luther King III. It's only one of 15 eternal flames around the world. Worth seeing and remembering.

Set in a little seated area - this small but significant focal point - sadly on the day we visited the glass cabinet had been shattered and the flame extinguished

We were moved by the words written in the tiles lining each of the four paths. Unfortunately, the flame wasn't lighting so it was a bit anti climactic!

Walked past this "attraction" however, we couldn't see the "eternal" flame. Very disappointing to be honest.

Set in a nice garden with seating. Unfortunately the seating is always occupied by street drinkers. They seem to keep themselves to themselves though.

This bright beacon of hope shines in this once divided city as a reminder to us all of its troubled past.
