Well we walk through the gate at least three times a week and rarely give it a thought our visitors could give us locals a history lesson, I am as guilty as any for taking what is around me for granted should try to find out more of our past history. My wife and I walked the Londonderry/Derry wall in September 2013, and visited the Ferryquay Gate (which is one of the 7 gates of the city wall). This gate is famous due to its role in the being closed by the Apprentice Boys in 1688 when King James II's Jacobite Army had arrived to take over the Derry garrison. This... More

This gate is here since 1865, and it replaces the original gateway, which had a drawbridge and tower. This gate is famous because the Apprentice Boys of Derry, closed it against the army of James 2nd, in December 1688. It's a magnificent structure, and offers great views from the top of it.
