About
This church was built on the site of St. Patrick's first church in 1932 to commemorate the 1500th anniversary of St. Patrick's at the Slaney river. The site has some remnants of the monastic site which formed here after the Saint's death. There is parking available at the Saul Road entrance and public toilets are available.

The value of this is heavily compromised by the fact that the building you see standing is not the original building even though I'm sure that it is as faithful a reproduction as could be achieved. That greatly lessened the experience for me. It is a beautiful site though.

We were the only ones there. It was very pretty place plus the church was nice to be in on a hot day. Well worth a look if in the area. There is parking in the layby outside for around 5 cars.

On our drive from Downpatrick to the picturesque little village of Strangford we came across Saul Church.
It wasn't a particularly sunny day but we stopped in the layby outside and had a stroll around this delightful little church.
Something very special about this place..... and what a stunning location.
Wish we'd had more time to explore.
Maybe that's a reason to go back to this beautiful part of Ireland. 😊🍀

This small church is a real gem. It's distinctive architecture can be seen for miles and the interior is as pleasing as the exterior. On a hot summer day you get a wonderful view of Strangford Lough and the Lecale peninsula. It's still a functioning church and services are held most Sundays. The tranquillity will soothe all souls.

Saul Church is the site St. Patrick rang the bell to announce the good news of faith to the villagers. The church was having a service with hymns of praise. It was the first church in Ireland the chieftain of the village dontated because of his new faith in Jesus.

A beautiful little stone church on a hill - very out of the way. Tremendous views all around. Church is very small, really not much to see, but its status as the cradle of Christianity in Ireland and its ties to St. Patrick makes it a worthwhile trip.

When in Downpatrick, try to visit Saul church, the site of St Patrick's first church in Ireland (probably!). Set peacefully on a hillside, this has been a place of prayer and pilgrimage for hundreds of years.

This beautiful little church was built in 1933 to commemorate the church Saint Patrick built on or near this site in 432 a.d. This is called “The cradle of Christianity”. The setting is nice with beautiful grounds and trees and landscaping.
Workers were getting ready to refinish the wooden floors but invited us in for a look.
We loved being able to visit another Saint Patrick site.
