The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

This was an interesting tour and our guide was very knowledgeable of the troubles in Northern Ireland and how prisoners were segregated. The stories were interesting and the guide kept the group interested and led the tour at a pace suitable to all in the group. The guide allowed time for photos and questioning. Visited the café but was disappointed... More

A real eye opener! Good guide, very entertaining and informative. A good wet weather option, not that you'll need many of the in sunny Belfast.

I thought this would be a special treat for Mrs O for our second wedding anniversary. She certainly enjoyed it, especially the story of the gaol and its role in the recent history of Belfast.

Visited the jail today and loved it! Our tour guide Trisha was great, she was so well informed, really funny and made the whole group feel welcome. Our group was about 25 people, the tour lasts 1.5hours and told us a lot we didn't know about the history of Belfast. Thoroughly recommend this as a day out.

Great tour with good value for money. The renovations are a great standard and reflect the horror of incarceration and execution.

Admittedly we didn't go to all of the attractions in the city, but this would be hard to beat. We loved the tour, it was really well thought out, and the guide (Eoghan) tackled sensitive and emotive topics very well and was very engaging. The building itself is stunning, both inside and out - I loved that it was stripped... More

This was very interesting and wheelchair friendly. The tour guide was very informative however I would have liked to have seen more for my money as I have visited Peterhead jail in Scotland and you got to see the laundry the kitchens and all that sort of thing. I would have also liked to have headsets and take my own... More

And he did introduce us to his mum (apparently)in crums cafe....! Funny man. Very interesting to hear and see the history behind this big old building and this was brought to life... More

A brilliant tour led by an ex prison officer at the gaol. The tour managed to be amusing, shocking, thought provoking and blooming freezing. definitely a must do. Our guide disappeared before I could tip him which was a shame as he thoroughly deserved it.
