About
The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

A great way to kill a few hours. Vague memories of watching the news in the early 80s came flooding back as we moved from the Crum’s Victorian origins through to the Troubles and the various commentaries by ex-inmates. Audio-visual information was excellent.

    Crumlin May 2023 - interesting
Loads of information provided throughout the self guided tour. My only complaint was that I purchased the audio guide expecting it to contain additional information but it just contained what was displayed on the tour so I wasted my money - and time because it was quicker to read the signs than listen to the audio. Only buy the audio if you want it in another language.

An interesting opportunity to visit a famous/notorious jail
An interesting opportunity to visit a famous/notorious jail with a number of holographic and on-demand video displays on the ground floor of C wing. "Cuffs" restaurant is well worth a visit too. A worthwhile way to spend around 90 minutes in Belfast, and much cheaper than the Titanic exhibition!

This historic building is a must see on your trip to Belfast. We had a great time and really enjoyed our visit. The guide we had was very informative and to the point and didn't hold back on the horrors that unfolded in this building. You can walk to this place from city centre or get a quick taxi at a cheap price. Definitely a must see.

    Interesting
This is a fascinating place to visit - well laid out information and exhibits within the gaol building - we had bought tour headsets but was a quiet time when we went so not really needed as information available through button options in the cells. Thought provoking - there was a very informative exhibit depicting process of execution. Not for everyone but option to continue without was available. Staff friendly and helpful.

An informative and Interesting morning (with teens)
This was pretty fun. My teens love touring old jails and this one didn’t disappoint! Yes there is some technology on the tour, videos and holograms which was not an unwelcome touch. The stories were interesting, and a lesson on the troubles was a good recap for my teens. The tunnel under to the courthouse was very cool. But the crowning moment was the condemned man room, leading to the execution chamber. Very haunting! I do recommend this if you like old jails, took us about an hour to walk through (not listening to every little story).

    Excellent museum
This is a very well presented museum with interactive displays during the self guided tour. We took about 1 1/2 hours to go round. The staff were very knowledgeable and keen to provide additional information. We enjoyed a bowl of soup in the restaurant for lunch. Well worth a visit. Easy to go round the street murals of both sides from here.

    Really enjoyed our informative visit!
We really enjoyed our visit and felt it was good value as we spent 2 hours there and didn't look /watch every single thing. It was a well organised place with a clear system/one way route, and very informative, we learnt a lot. It was so interesting to learn about the history of the place as well as some of the people, and to see the building first hand. The only point for improvement is that there were occasional bottlenecks waiting for some of the gates to open to move into certain areas, but it wasn't a problem for us (could be tiresome if you had children or if it was busier)

Did you know you can have events at The Crumlin Road Gaol.
We had a family event here. What a venue! So accommodating to all our needs. The Matrons Gallery is a fantastic space complete with it's own bar. The real stand out was the staff. Really helpful, lively and engaging and they poured a great pint. Nothing was too much bother. If you are looking for somewhere a bit different to have an event give them a shout.

    SPLENDID THROUGHT
From arriving during a heavy rainfall, to leaving after Sunday lunch in 'Cuffs', the day can only be described as SUPERB ! Our tour guide was a wealth of information and able to answer every question put to him. My only slight critism would be, during the time in the cell of the condemned prisoner , it was extremely tight for space with the high number of visitors. But overall a superb visitor attraction and would recommend it to anyone. After the tour we had Sunday lunch in the 'Cuffs restaurant - again no complaints whatsoever. The food was superb and although the staff were very busy, they had a little time to be able to have a conversation with most diners.

Interesting place to see. We had great commentary from our taxi driver who dropped us off, which set the visit up well.
The place was well laid out with great information and videos. Just take your time to take it all in.

We spent over three hours in this very atmospheric property. There was so much to see, hear and read. It gave you a real insight as the what life must have been like when it was first built right up to the times before it closed.

We thought it gave a very balanced view of the ‘troubles’ and didn’t favour either side.

Beware that it’s an old building and as such was quite cold after you had been in it a while.

Definitely worth the entrance fee.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would!! The gaol is really well thought out as an attraction. It held the attention of my 15 year old nephew - through the use of videos and holograms. It was long enough to feel like value for money without being too long. My only issue was that you could not always hear what the video said if someone else had a video playing in the next room. Would definitely recommend to anyone coming for a city break to Belfast.

Wasn’t sure what to expect with this attraction but all four or us really enjoyed this interesting and thought provoking experience. Couple this up with a hop on hop off bus trip around Belfast city to get the most out of this experience

If you visit Belfast and want to understand the history behind the city, then a visit to the 'Cumlin' is a must do experience.

At £14 per adult, it's worth it.

Engaging, informative, and shocking, the Gaol is an educational immersion into the history of Belfast.

Wasn't sure what to expect before we went but we had an amazing time at this interesting and thought provoking exhibition. Very modern and up to date exhibits with lots of interaction , the life size holograms were eerie and informative.
So much to see and take in , we opted for the self guided tour and we thoroughly enjoyed walking round at our own pace.
Cafe and toilets on site as well as an amazing gift shop with very friendly and helpful staff.
We used the hop on and hop off bus tour to get to and from the museum.
Somewhere everyone should visiit.

A must do in Belfast, really well done experience combining lights, sounds and holographic videos to explore the history of the gaol.

In my opinion, better than the titanic experience.

This is an excellent attraction and should be part of your itinerary if in Belfast.
I'm old enough to have watched the troubles unfold every night on the news and in the papers, and this was a name we heard often.
Very informative and highly recommended.

A great place to visit. Haunting experience. Nice use of holograms to tell the stories!
Fascinating history- particularly given that we remembered the most recent sections.
Very helpful front desk who looked after our large bag.

Very informative with regards to the history of the gaol, courthouse and the troubles in Belfast. Very interactive. Good value for money. Very easy to get to on any service bus or a city sightseeing tour bus.

However, even though I knew to wrap up warm (with it being a gaol and having read previous reviews about the cold), by the end of the visit I was freezing cold and rushed the last section where you go outside - so be well prepared!

Cruffs restaurant on site is also a must visit! (I’ve reviewed that separately)
