Description:

On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4...

On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4 motorway, lies the estate of Penllergare Valley Woods. Although the names are similar, the village of Penllergaer grew up as a separate entity from the Dillwyn Llewellyn Penllergare estate. Here, deep in the valley, away from the noise and fumes of the passing traffic and encroaching development, you'll find the overgrown but still discernable remnants of an important historic landscape. It is a secret and magical place. A place where you can enjoy the sound of birds, delight in the profusion of wild flowers, discover evidence of exotic plantings and uncover for yourself the hidden features of a grand design. The romantic and picturesque Penllergare was once created for the enjoyment of its creator John Dillwyn Llewelyn - a pioneering mover in science, nature, photography and astronomy in the 19th century. After over half a century of neglect, today it is a place that can be enjoyed and explored by everyone. It is a landscape that is gradually being revived, restored and regenerated by us all. Penllergare Valley Woods are run and maintained by Penllergare Trust, a small, local charity set-up specifically for this purpose. All the income from our coffee shop and car park goes back into the Trust to help us to maintain and further improve the woods. We also rely on donations, grants and our team of volunteers to continue our work. Coffee Shop Open 10am-4pm daily (except Xmas day) Car Park Open 9am-5pm daily (except Xmas day) - Pay & Display

This is a really nice area to spend a few hours walking around in the countryside surrounded by trees, rivers and flowers. Lately ut gas to my mind veen spoilt vy the number of difs running around. Some owners keep them under control but others just let them run and also don't pick up their mess. Long leads should be... More

Thank you for your review. I am glad you enjoy your visits to us, but sorry to hear that you have had issues with loose dogs. We ask our dog-walking visitors to keep their dogs under close control at all times - either on a short lead, or with very good recall and staying close to the owner. Unfortunately, not... More

Just off the M4 at Junction 47 this is a delightful area to walk with flowers, established trees, a lake, an Archimedes screw and a waterfall plus a replica round house. The walk is neither easy or strenuous because there are choices of routes. It's useful to call into the cafe before you start to get the free map which... More

4 adults and 3 dogs went for a walk! The woodlands were lovely and the waterfalls made a calming sound against the trees. We finished with a coffee/ hot chocolate at the cafe which was staffed by a lovely group of ladies. The homemade cakes were delicious too. A perfect oasis not far from the M4 junction so access nice... More

The location is very easy to access - just off Junction 47 of the south Wales M4. Car parking is good with a reasonable all day fee of £2.00. The site is considerable, and suitable for walkers, strollers, buggies, nature lovers, photographers etc. The layout varies from garden to woodland and the paths are all well maintained. Lots to explore... More

we decided to visit Penllergear Woods earlier this year and we were really pleased we did, the car parking outside was poor and the pot holes in the car park, something to avoid at all costs, however the woods and walks were really great (we had been told by many friends that this place was great and must admit well... Absolutely breathtaking views, away from the hustle and bustle of your normal life. Small and medium sized Waterfalls and many many little streams and walkways. There are the flatter cleaner routes for the less able and there's also some difficult less travelled routes that are much steeper and very muddy/boggy. Walking boots or wellies are definitely a must and maybe... More
