Shamefully, despite living in or near Cardiff for many years, I've only recently walked the length of the barrage. The engineering, locks and history displays appeal to my nerdy side while the views are lovely on a sunny day. A Cardiff success story.

A gentle walk for families; a good place to run; to the Barrage that offers good views, fresh air and an interesting look at the engineering.

An amazing structure, capturing the contents of the rivers Taff and Ely within a gigantic fresh water lake, guarded by a sea lock.

Lovely walk. Interesting. Lots of things to take photos of on the way from palm trees to a giant crocodile. Walked one way and caught the boat back. Fab.

The Barrage has harnessed the Rivers Ely and Taff to create a permanent lagoon offering sailing and boating activities. The old Cardiff docks now feature waterside cafes, historical and modern attractions and give pedestrian access to Penarth with views across to Somerset, Flatholme and Steepholme Islands, and also to a small wetland.

A walk accross the barage to Penarth gives you the sea on one side and the huge inland lake on the other. Stop to see a Captain Scott exhibition on the way. Take the tourist train , or a water taxi back after admiring the vast locks and the feat of engineering.

Great area to find restaurants, boat trips and lovely scenery. We only spent the last few hours of our visit down this end of town but it's definitely something we will be looking to return for.
