Strongly agree with nickh362. The area around the bridge from Windsor is lovely, and the river offers pleasant views. But the high street is shabby and dull with many shops closed and empty and others shuttered---on a Saturday. It might have been worth the trudge if the college had been open, but an aggressively rude guard told us without any explanation that "the college is closed to you." Presumably, all those classes that meet on Saturdays would be disrupted by visitors. Even access to the chapel was blocked.

Always wanted to go to Windsor and walk over the bridge to Eton. Such a quaint place with lovely shops, hanging baskets of flowers and eateries. Walked to the end of the street and then back down the other side, lovely.

We traveled from London to Windsor in order to visiting Windsor Castle not realizing that the town of Eton was just over a very short footbridge. After the craziness of the town of Windsor (I would compare Windsor to Gatlinburg here in the US - somewhat of a tourist trap.), Eton is a quaint and quiet village. Unfortunately, we were there on a Sunday so most of Eton was shut down and it was extremely quiet save for the occasional car driving down the street. It was interesting to actually see Eton College in person (although you can really only see the outside). If you're visiting Windsor, you can't miss having a peek at Eton, too.

You can get lovely glossy brochures of the Eton Walkway at the Eton Station which are more informative than the walk itself. Yes, it's self guided but I did not think that meant there would be no signage or directions to the places on the route. The itinerary started out well enough despite the fact that the Cockpit was completely covered in scaffolding making it very easy to overlook the pillar box. The walk around Eton College (4-6) was the most interesting and clearly seen. But after that it was confusing and not well indicated. Despite asking several locals where to find Skinner's Bridge, the Herschel Observatory, we were unable to locate them (the locals did not even know about the Walkway). So ended up doubling back in hopes of visiting the Antiquities museum, but it was closed. The guide did not mention that it only opens on Sunday... All in all, I felt it was a disappointing and frustrating walk. The best part was seeing Eton and the points of interest there. Best to just visit Eton proper, skip the walk and spend the rest of the time at Windsor

The High Street is a must for antique shoppers. The finely preserved shop fronts include a half-timbered building believed to date from 1420. Eton College occupies the whole of Eton north of Barnes Pool bridge and was founded by King Henry VI in 1440 and is second only to Winchester as the oldest public school in England.

A waymarked 3.2km (2 mile) walk around Eton. It take you to the obvious locations such as the College, and well known College related landmarks such as the Burning Bush, but it also introduces you to lesser known places around Eton such as the Christopher Inn, Baldwin's Bridge and the Eton Boat House.
