This mysterious stone circle is thought to have been constructed in Neolithic times between 2500 to 2000 BC by The Beaker people, who might have played a major role in the formation of another eerie ancient site at Stonehenge.

An atmospheric visit to a fascinating site on a blustery day. 2 good museums (one more traditional than the other) giving a good introduction to the site. Quite muddy underfoot on the circuit around the stones, but the site and the landscape speaks for itself...More

This surely one of Britain's most interesting locations, and unlike Stonehenge you can see it for free! The huge Neolithic stone circle at Avebury in Wiltshire. The circle is the largest of its type in the world, about 1/4 mile diameter, enclosing 28 acres. Each...More

A stone circle rarely heard about but as impressive as Stonehenge. The stones are striking in their size and shape and that they encircle the village of Avebury. You get a good view of the stones and the surrounding landscape from the top of the...More

A great place to visit. Unlike Stonehenge this is a living village, where you can walk amongst the stones and feel the history. A fabulous place with history, stories, ambiance and just great stones.

Interesting place for a walk around the stones. Museum is looking a bit dated but lots of history. Usual lovely food at National Trust cafe.

Didn’t make as big an impact as stone henge but it was still very interesting - very short on any information or general overview around and about the stones. Found the smaller museum more interesting and detailed. The shop was very boutique like - but...More

Stonehenge is commercialised and expensive. Avebury is the opposite! A Worl Heritage Site, this is the quintessential English village surrounded by Neolithic standing stones and deep trenches dug thousands of years ago. It is free to walk around and you get up close and personal...More

We went without any pre planning or a map. But you can get them off the internet. Just the atmosphere is wonderful. We went on one of the guided tours which was excellent. As someone has said the site is really quite small... More

The Stagecoach 49 to Devizes runs hourly from the Bus Station a few hundred yards from the Rail Station. It stops outside the Red Lion Pub in Avebury. Why not use Google Maps to plan the journey and perhaps visit... More

Check Anderson Tours for a good guided tour. I got the combo with Avebury and Stonehenge at a cheap price point. The guide was very knowledgeable too!
