Did you know M&S was born in Leeds? Discover our story and unlock the fascinating journey that has made M&S one of Britain's best loved retailers. Explore our Marks In Time Exhibition and uncover some fascinating facts from over 130 years of M&S history: Did you know that we sold our first bra in 1926? How about that our scientists worked with the government during WW2 to help with rationing strategy? Or even that when we were one of the first to introduce 'avocado pears' in 1959 one customer tried to serve it as a dessert with custard? From the clothes we wear to the food we eat the Marks In Time Exhibition showcases the M&S Company Archive collection, tracking the development of the business from 1884 to the present day. Not only is our exhibition completely free, we also welcome groups as part of our free Group Travel programme, and run schools and events programmes - see our website for more information.

Whilst only a small museum, it is packed with everything from the history of Marks & Spencer. There is a great archive, which is open occasionally to the public, a quiet reading area, and various 'hands-on' exhibits. A really well thought out history with some reminiscences that bring back happy memories.

This is a small museum attached to a much larger set of archives (which open from time to time), it is outside the City Centre but worth visiting if you have a spare hour.

We visited this wonderful place as a coach party group and as soon as we arrived we were offered a drink while we watched an introduction with photos on how Marks & Spencers began, all those years ago. We were given a very interesting talk while we had our refreshments. Then we were split into 2 groups to accompany another... More

Lovely little archives with lots of information on the history of M&S. Staff were very friendly, helpful and informative, readily answering questions and telling us more about the exhibition. Worth the walk although it's a shame it's so far away from any other local attractions! Would also probably be useful for anyone wanting to know more about how the archives... More

Came here with my uncle a number of times while we were in Leeds to donate some items. The displays are interesting and the staff are nice. I wouldn't come here directly as a visit to a museum but while I was here it was nice enough and I would recommend to anybody interested in the heritage of the company.

I was really disappointed on arrival at the archive. It was one room with poor displays and very uninterested staff. There isn't any where to have a drink or a snack, although the man did offer me a drink. He must have taken pity on me after that long walk to get to the place. It on the description a... More

Hi Fricia, We're sorry to hear you were disappointed with your visit to the archive. We're a small team but we hope to offer visitors an insight into the history of M&S. There are places nearby where visitors can buy a drink and a sandwich, unfortunately we don't have the space to offer such cafe facilities here. As you mentioned... More

Went with a group of friends both male and female and arrived at 10 a.m. Even allowing for every person reading the notices, information etc. round the walls of this very small Museum we were ready for leaving within 30 minutes. As we had travelled several miles to visit this attraction we were very disappointed. We had hoped for a... More

The M&S Company archive is a joint venture between M&S and the University of Leeds. It is situated in a modern, environmentally friendly building on the University campus and is free of charge. The venue essentially archives the history of one of the UK's favourite retailers through displays of merchandise, equipment informations boards. There are a number of interactive games... More

I visited here, having an hour or so to spare, and I am so glad I did. The staff are ever so friendly, there is free hot drinks, and its always changing. Apparently they have open days to show the public additional parts of the archive. Its only small (As its also a research centre) but worth a visit, and... More
